Despite its state of utter disrepair – and offputting interior – locals are keen not to see the historic property demolished. Built in 1849, the home once belonged to the station’s crossing keeper, who was tasked with ensuring pedestrians and vehicles could pass over the tracks safely. Prior to automatic lifting barriers, the crossing keeper would manually open and close the gates where the tracks intersected with public roads. Situated on the north bank of the River Trent, the village is about four miles south of Southwell and 8 miles southwest of Newark.
