A CRAZED dad and son who dragged a cop along the road at 50mph as he clung to their motor were both caged. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! PC Smith, 35, told how he tried desperately to cling on as Douglas Mills, 58, and his namesake son, 32, fled before being shoved into the road and left for dead. The hero officer’s ordeal unfolded when he approached the Audi after witnessing a suspected drug deal while the duo were parked up in Hamilton. Suddenly he was yanked inside the vehicle where one of the thugs gripped him and rained blows on his head during a struggle. He then tumbled out as the motor accelerated and was left in a heap in the road badly injured. The father-and-son pair denied attempted murder at the High Court in Glasgow and claimed they thought they were being ambushed by a mystery assailant but a jury saw through their story. They now face lengthy prison sentences after the trial heard PC Smith was left scarred for life and has still not been able to return to duty following the attack. Recalling the kill bid in August 2024, he told jurors: “I thought I was never going to see my family again.” Most read in The Sun The terrified cop yelled “you are going to kill me” while dangling from a motor as a maniac father and son raced off at 50mph Credit: Les Gallagher They were today convicted of the murder bid Credit: Les Gallagher He testified how he and fellow plain-clothed officer Colin Harris had spotted the car and identified Mills Jnr as the driver. Jurors heard how the cops watched a man cross the road apparently clutching cash and go up to the passenger-side window before making off. PC Smith said he believed the male was exchanging the cash “for drugs or some other item”. He got out of their unmarked car clutching his warrant card and radio and shouted “loudly” that he was police. As he approached Mills Jnr appeared “irritated”. Describing what happened next, PC Smith said: “It was all very instantaneous. I felt myself being pulled off my feet. “The car began to move off at speed.” Asked who was “pulling” him inside, he told prosecutor Michelle Brannagan: “It all happened so quickly. It took me completely by surprise. I was off my feet before I knew what was happening.” Then his legs were left hanging outside the car while he was being thumped on the head, the jury was told. The cop went on: “I was off my feet before I knew what was happening. I had no opportunity to balance myself. “My legs were outside the car. All I remember was blows to my head and, to be honest, panicking.” The motor’s speedometer was spotted racing to 50mph “in a matter of seconds”. PC Smith said he could not tell who was hitting him as things were “blurry”. The court heard: “They were strong enough to make me feel afraid that I would lose consciousness if I did not protect myself. “I was shouting that they were going to kill me.” He then told how his assailant appeared to release his grip on him leaving him at risk of falling out. And the court heard he reckoned he was then shoved out. PC Smith recalled: “I thought, there is no chance I am surviving here if I hit the road at this speed.” Then came the “truly terrifying” feeling of “air blowing around” him. He testified from behind a screen to spare him having to watch footage. But he recalled the last thing he saw before things went “black” was of the driver “almost looking happy”. His next memory was of being rushed to A&E in an ambulance. Mills Jnr claimed he had earlier been for Botox treatment and visited a bakery to pick up cakes. The fiend claimed to have stopped to send a text when he saw a man “on top” of his dad. He then drove off as he was “scared for my life”. When he found out later it was an officer he arranged to hand himself in. PC Smith refuted claims he failed to indicate he was a cop or that he “launched” himself into the Audi stop it at any cost. Jurors heard he suffered a fractured skull and blood clot while a chunk of skin came off his back in the fall. And he remains on a waiting list for ankle ligament reconstruction. Asked about his injuries, PC Smith — who has seven years’ service with the force — added: “Every time I look in the mirror makes me think of this every single day.” Judge William Gallacher remanded both men in custody as sentencing was deferred.
