CPI national secretary K. Ramakrishna has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that recent developments and observations by the Supreme Court have raised serious questions over the functioning of the Election Commission of India.In a statement, Mr. Ramakrishna alleged that the Election Commission’s earlier claim that amendments to the electoral rules had been made with the permission of the Supreme Court were contradicted by the court’s observations. He said the Chief Justice of India had also directed that the relevant records be produced before the court.Mr. Ramakrishna alleged that decisions of the Election Commission were being taken under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He further alleged that the exercise to delete voters’ names was being carried out with their support.He claimed that the other two Election Commissioners had raised objections on 14 occasions over the past 10 months, but their concerns had allegedly been disregarded. He accused the CEC of taking unilateral decisions and demanded that Mr. Gyanesh Kumar resign immediately.Mr. Ramakrishna said the INDIA bloc parties were holding protests in Delhi and would organise further demonstrations, including a nationwide protest on November 1.
