ACME is a deeply satirical and surprisingly emotional addition to the Looney Tunes franchise that radically reinvents the pair's relationship. The film, based on a New Yorker article of the same name, follows Wile E. Coyote's attempts to get financial restitution after ACME's gadgets all backfire on him. This sets up Wile E. Coyote to hire Kevin Avery, a down-on-his-luck lawyer, to represent him in a case that steadily reveals a major conspiracy at the heart of the franchise. This all leads to a surprisingly high-profile case that serves as a clear stand-in for corporate malpractice in the real world. On top of that, though, Coyote VS ACME is a loving subversion of one of the most popular Looney Tunes duos ever. It completely inverts the dynamic between Coyote and Road Runner, leaving the audience to reimagine every cartoon they've ever watched starring the pair and changing their future appearances together. Coyote Doesn't End Up Winning In Coyote VS ACME (And That's The Point) Despite the best efforts of Kevin and Paige, Coyote ends up losing his climactic case in Coyote VS ACME. However, that's crucial to the underlying moral of the movie. While it takes Kevin a while to fully throw himself into the case, his eventual faith in Wile E and frustrations with all the ways ACME is able to manipulate the court system to their advantage lead him to genuinely throw himself into the case. However, despite the testimony of Road Runner and Foghorn Leghorn's confession that his company has indeed been experimenting on cartoons, the government does not pursue federal charges against ACME. Although this is a major setback, the heroes up holding their heads high (in part because they get to at least humiliate Foghorn and Buddy by trapping them in a cage meant for the Road Runner). The central moral of the film is that persistence is the key to success, even if it never seems to work. Kevin is won over by Wile E when he witnesses all of the coyote's efforts to cross a cliff fail, only for the toon to keep trying until he does succeed. Every defeat doesn't mean the battle is over. On the contrary, it just means the battle has to keep going. Given the final resolution of the movie, this moral is central to what makes the movie work on a thematic level. While they lose the titular case, Coyote's efforts open the door for ACME's eventual defeat and changes how the world sees the company. ACME's Secret Conspiracy Explained Initially, ACME products are suggested to simply be faulty to a tee, causing problems for Wile E Coyote and all the other toons due to shoddy design. However, the products have actually been working just as they were intended. They were never meant to work and instead injure the toons on purpose as part of a larger scheme by ACME to produce products that appeal to humans. Due to their innate durability and general lack of power in society, ACME has effectively been using the toons as test subjects, working out the dangerous kinks or discovering new uses for their ideas to better market them to humans. Anyone who knows about the process is restrained by ACME, either by placing them in a mental institution or by leaving them in a bottomless hole. It's the most overtly political element of Coyote VS ACME, underscoring how corporations (and more specifically the people that run them) are willing to use people as a means to a financially beneficial end. Even when confronted with the conspiracy, the general public dismisses Kevin's arguments and sides with Foghorn, at least at first. Coyote And Road Runner's Relationship Is Different Now One of the most unexpectedly emotional beats in Coyote VS ACME is the way the film recontexualizes the dynamic between Coyote and Road Runner. The two have been rivals for over seventy years, often appearing together as one of Looney Tunes' most iconic double acts. Despite his decades of trying to catch and eat the Road Runner, the Coyote has retained his dogged pursuit of the bird. However, it turns out that Road Runner has never held any real animosity for the predator. In fact, during the federal court case, Road Runner appears as a witness to argue for Coyote, revealing that he sees the two of them as friends. This completely inverts one of the franchise's most consistent dynamics, suggesting that their chases have been more of a game to the Road Runner all along. This explains why Road Runner never leaves the desert or actively fights the Coyote. The Road Runner sees Coyote as a playmate instead of a predator, a revelation that leaves the Coyote silently shocked and deeply moved. It's a powerful moment for fans of the characters, especially when the movie ends with the pair once again chasing. Coyote VS ACME's Bittersweet Ending Gives The Heroes A Win Ultimately, the resolution of Coyote VS ACME comes when the other toons, impressed with Kevin's work, all elect to hire him as part of a class-action lawsuit against ACME for their harmful products. Because Coyote's case had been largely lost on his status as the only plaintiff, these additional figures help turn the tide towards the heroes and against ACME. Thanks to the resulting shift in public perception, ACME is investigated by the government, leading directly to the arrests of Foghorn Leghorn and Buddy. This is the true resolution of the movie, with the central idea that people together can do what no one else can do on their own. It's a quietly inspiring ending, reinforcing the idea that persistence is the key to bringing down the powerhouses. The True Meaning Of Coyote VS ACME The moral of Coyote VS. ACME takes on extra meaning in light of the film's own history. Initially shelved by Warner Bros. as a tax write-off, the furious fan reception and the resistance of the filmmakers led to the movie eventually being sold to another studio and finally reaching theaters. Since then, it's been earning sterling reviews. This is reflective of the movie, where the corporation willing to sacrifice the efforts, struggles, and desires of others for the bottom line is ultimately proven wrong. It's a win for the little guy, even if just a moral victory. Although Wile E doesn't get what he wanted, whether that be the Road Runner or the money back from ACME, he helped lay the foundation for ACME's collapse. Even Road Runner's admission of friendship plays into this concept, underscoring how the differences between the little guys can't compare to the common ground forged by persistence and friendship.
