Alabama Life & CultureThe Chicks got their digs in on Donald Trump after this week's election.PixabayBy Brian Linder | blinder@pennlive.comThe Chicks are not fans of Donald Trump, and the president certainly is not a fan of them.Frontwoman Natalie Maines went after Trump earlier this year on social media, calling him a “fugly slut,” and just last month she made headlines again for expressing her dislike of him to fans at a show. Trump’s White House did not let that one slide. “Natalie Maines is a despicable nobody who clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has completely rotted her peanut-sized brain,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle told US Weekly. So, considering the back-and-forth, it probably should not have been a surprise to see the reaction of Maines and The Chicks during their Nov. 3 show as the Blue Wave rolled in on election night. The group told its fans, “Welcome to our ‘blue-nami’ night,” according to Taste of Country. The members of the group — Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire — fanned themselves with red fans that read, “(Expletive) Trump,” as fans cheered. “So glad we can enjoy this night together,” Maines told the crowd. “Texas is blue. The Senate is blue. The House is blue.“This would be a very different night if that wasn’t the case.”Maines and The Chicks reinforced their disapproval of Trump last month as they began their anniversary tour to celebrate the 2006 album, “Taking the Long Way Home.”Billboard reported that The Chicks played a video montage that documented the uproar that surrounded the group after they spoke out against then-President George W. Bush in 2003.“We thought that was the worst it could get,” Maines told the crowd. “Now I’d give George W. Bush a big wet kiss ‘cause now we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from the United States.”Maines and the group drew scorn in 2003 when she told a crowd in London, “We’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”Maines and The Chicks were not fans of Bush and his decisions about the war in Iraq. Their comment quickly created a buzz in the United States with some country music stations even refusing to play their album. Maines also shared a photo of Trump on Instagram in May and wrote, ““Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything. My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help spread the message live. Named 1M times in the #epsteinfiles #democracy #freespeech #fuglyslut.”A White House spokesperson issued a similar statement to Fox News about Maines at the time, calling her a “despicable nobody who clearly suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain.”Brian Linder is the trending editor at PennLive.com.
