It was quickly closed by its creator. Well, exactly one year later, someone has done the same thing for Counter-Strike 2. As reported by Kotaku, the third-party CS2 Tracker site now has a 'slur tracking' tab that breaks down the number of chat messages containing slurs, with leaderboards for some of the most offensive, like the n-word and f-slur. Gamifying slurs in this way is hardly ideal, and goes beyond the remit of a tracker, but there are some alarming stats to come from this experiment that are worth highlighting. From the 494,000 players sampled, the site found that roughly 7% of all Counter-Strike 2 players have said a slur at least once. A staggering 2% of all in-game messages also contained a slur, or an average of 1 in 48, accounting for 204 million slurs each year. To put that into perspective, 17.6% of matches contained homophobic or racist language, equal to 1 in 6 games. It really is a game of Russian Roulette. That's because you can search for any username so long as the account isn't private and find their in-game messages, meaning that there is now a database that can flag whether you've ever said a slur in Counter-Strike 2. Players have called it a "consent abuse" even though it's taken from public lobbies, and implored one another to complain to the site, pleading for the chat logs to be removed. One Reddit user, b7tuhan, even claimed that saying slurs in-game "doesn't show your real life behavior or feelings," as though there aren't any queer or non-white people being subjected to this abuse daily. I'm just saying, if your mind jumps to the n-word or f-slur when you're angry at a game, it doesn't exactly reflect well on you. As one commenter put it, "Lmao just say [you're] scared of [your] racist chat logs." A leaderboard is an awful idea, whichever way you slice it. Not everyone is scared of their toxic online behavior and will inevitably turn the rankings into a competition to be even more toxic. But the actual tracking is a useful metric, because it provides hard data showing that Counter-Strike 2 is out of control and that moderation needs to improve. 17% of all matches containing a slur of some kind is unacceptable, 7% of players in one of the most popular shooters of all-time saying slurs is unacceptable, and 204 million a year is unacceptable.
