'Could not get away fast enough': UK's lowest-ranking motorway services revealed - from 'unsafe' Somerset shockers to 'depressing' stops in Yorkshire

When driving across long stretches of the motorway, gritting your teeth through traffic and trawling by acres of homogeneous dull views, the last thing you need is to stop at an awful service station.There are lots of motorway services to choose from in the UK, but not all of them seem to provide the same quality. New research has analysed the Google reviews for 97 service stations across the country this month and calculated an average rating. Both sides of the motorway were combined when listed separately online. Family holiday specialists at Ski Famille identified the lowest ranking as Moto's Bridgwater on the M5 in Somerset.Located at junction 24, a whopping 9,994 reviews averaged at just 3.05 stars. It failed to impress drivers, with one in five even rating it a paltry single star.One person fumed: 'One of the worst services I've been to. Getting in and out was chaotic and unsafe for both drivers and pedestrians. 'Toilets are located next to Burger King, not easy to access without bumping into people waiting for their food in the queue.' Indeed, one driver went as far as saying it was a 'real pleasure to stop here as the toilets were absolutely cleaned to a very high standard'.They added: 'The toilets have to be the best toilets I have used in a service station. Overall customer service was on point and the toilets were very clean.'Moto's Leeming Bar came out as the second-lowest rated in the research, and can be found on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire.The service station averaged 3.26 stars from 2,151 reviews, and one disappointed motorist said: 'One of the most depressing service areas I've ever been to. There is nothing there but a petrol station and a grim Costa which looks like a throwback from 1970.'It must be horrible for the staff working there. Could not get away fast enough.'Another Moto service station, Severn View on the M48 near the Severn Bridge received 3.6 stars out of five from 2,252 reviews.Roadchef Bothwell on the M74 in South Lanarkshire averaged 3.63 stars from 1,257 reviews, and was followed by Moto's Frankley on the M5 in Worcestershire, with 3.64 stars from 9,466 reviews rounding off the lowest-rated five. Moto's Lancaster service station on the M6 ranked sixth, with 3.65 stars from 12,798 reviews.Meanwhile, Welcome Break's Gordano on the M5, North Somerset, scored 3.66 stars from 9,218 reviews, followed by another Welcome Break spot – Sedgemoor Northbound, on the M5 in Somerset – which averaged 3.68 stars from 4,994 reviews.Elsewhere, Moto's Scotch Corner on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire placed as the ninth lowest-rated with 3.71 stars from 6,599 reviews. Moto's Severn View, pictured, ranked third overall, failing to impress driversMoto's Knutsford service station on the M6 in Cheshire rounded off the list of the lowest-rated ten spots, with 3.71 stars from 10,500 reviews.An independent Motorway Services User Survey from Transport Focus is set to be released in November.A Moto spokesman told the Daily Mail: 'We take all customer feedback seriously and use it to identify where we can continue improving the experience at our sites.'However, this particular ranking is based on historic, self-selecting Google reviews rather than a representative survey of current motorway service users. Ratings can have been accumulated over many years, across very different volumes of reviews, and therefore do not necessarily reflect the experience customers will find at a site today.'Independent research from Transport Focus provides a much broader assessment of the motorway services experience. 'Its most recent survey spoke directly to more than 30,000 visitors across 120 motorway service areas, with Moto Rugby ranked the highest-rated services in Britain. A new Transport Focus Motorway Services User Survey is due to be published on November 10.'We continue to invest significantly across our estate and will keep listening to customers and improving our sites wherever there is more we can do.'A Roadchef spokesman said: 'We continually review customer feedback from a variety of sources to help enhance the experience we provide to the millions of road users we serve each year.'Over the next five years, we’re undertaking a programme of investment across the business, including in EV charging, HGV facilities, new retail and catering options, and the development of new sites. This reflects our commitment to continuously improve the experience for our customers.'The Daily Mail approached Welcome Break for comment. It comes after the worst road in England was named recently as the M27, in Hampshire.Beginning west of Southampton, in Cadnam, and ending in the northern outskirts of Portsmouth, this 28-mile stretch of tarmac has been slammed on account of its 'terrible' roadworks and long queues.In fact, nearly half of motorists were dissatisfied with their trips on the road, according to the Strategic Roads User Survey by independent watchdog, Transport Focus. With a 56 per cent satisfaction rating, this was the lowest score achieved by any strategic road in England.Drivers were particularly disappointed with the journey time, which scored only 55 per cent overall.'Roadworks on M27 are terrible, the reduced speed, the narrow lanes and very rarely see roadworks actually taking place,' one driver fumed. 'The roadworks appear deserted.'Roadworks, which inevitably result in reduced lanes, lower speed limits and long queues, were among motorists' biggest complaints in the survey of more than 9,500 drivers.
