Costco shoppers entitled to $14M settlement money

Quartz reports that the wholesale retailer agreed to pay this settlement in order to resolve a class action lawsuit accusing the company of sending commercial emails with false or misleading subject lines to people in Washington state, where the company is headquartered. As such, the company was accused of violating the state’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. Court documents specifically point to Costco emails with subject lines proclaiming things like “Today is the last day to access Member-Only Saving[s]” despite the fact that the company had already decided to extend these deals past the advertised expiration dates.The Seattle Times reports that Costco, while agreeing to the settlement, has denied the allegations. “The lawsuit is not well grounded in law or fact,” the company said via case documents. “As part of the proposed settlement, defendant does not admit to any wrongdoing, maintains its compliance with the law and continues to deny the allegations against it.”Any Washington resident whose email addresses are in Costco’s records who received promotional emails between June 2021 and July 2026 might be eligible to file a claim, Fox Business states. Claims can be filed — and more information found — at the settlement website at this link. Claims must be filed by Aug. 24. Class members can choose to receive payments via virtual method such as Venmo or as paper checks. How much payments will be for each claimant is unclear.
