Coronation Street legend joins A-list cast for new series of huge BBC thriller Nightsleeper

NIGHTSLEEPER is returning for a second season, with a stellar cast, as the action switches from a train to a FERRY. Peaky Blinders’ Joe Cole starred in series one of the BBC thriller, about a device discovered on board a Glasgow-to-London overnight train which could prove disastrous for its hundreds of passengers. The vessel’s engineer Johnny, played by Christian Cooke, must work with a boffin of the National Cyber Security Centre (Colin Morgan) to avert a catastrophe at sea and save the lives of everyone on the boat. So, too, are Madeleine Mantock, Ian McElhinney and rising star Alexander Arnold. The BBC show’s writer, Nick Leather, said: “It’s so much fun to be embarking on a second Nightsleeper journey — and on a route I know so well, with the Belfast-to-Liverpool ferry as our new box of tricks. “We’ve assembled a wonderful cast. I can’t wait to welcome the audience on board for a non-stop night to remember.” The slightly tongue-in-cheek style of series one was perhaps not to all viewers’ tastes. Nevertheless, it still enjoyed huge ratings success — of the sort that the makers of more conventional dramas would kill for. Most read in TV Now, the next run, much of it to be filmed in Belfast, sounds every bit as gripping. But Welsh Catherine, a fan of her hometown club Swansea City, feared she’d betray her roots with the role. “They’ve asked me three times to be on the Wrexham show,” she told the Sunday Times magazine. “I am from Swansea. His character Martin Gilmour is an art critic who grew up poor but won a scholarship to boarding school where he meets wealthy, charismatic aristocrat Ben Fitzmaurice, played by Tom Cullen. For 25 years, Martin’s life is shaped by his friendship with Ben – until things come to a head when his pal throws a lavish 40th birthday and Martin ends up being questioned by police. But Luke feels he has a lot in common with Martin as he came “from a small village to London at 17, not knowing anyone or anything”. Luke adds: “Being brought up in a religious background, having blinkers on then all of a sudden torn off, and then arriving in this city and going to college and feeling very much like an outsider – Martin very much has lived his life like that. “His lucky strike is that a kind, handsome, school friend decides to take him under his wing – which sadly never happened to me.” Comment now
