Dezeen Showroom: Portuguese brand GenCork combines one of the world's most sustainable natural materials with customisable algorithmically generated design, creating an insulating wall cladding that makes a strong visual impression. GenCork's cork wall is made using the Corkvectors algorithm, which blends organic patterns inspired by nature with geometric structure to create a dynamic 3D surface design. GenCork's cork wall is algorithmically designed The panels make use of cork, which is a highly renewable material, harvested from trees without cutting them down and so allowing forests to continually regenerate. GenCork's owner and producer Sofalca lowers the environmental impact even further with its expanded black cork, which is made using a zero-waste process where steam from waste biomass from the cork's cleaning and milling bonds the material together with only its natural resin. The panels are made from expanded black cork This process also gives the panels their distinctive rich colour, darker and earthier than raw cork, while CNC milling gives it its precise relief. The computational design system allows the pattern to be customised to the dimensions of the wall or other parameters, while cork's strong thermal and acoustic insulating properties make the product as functional as it is aesthetic.
