Cops seize equipment in Agusan del Sur crackdown vs illegal mining

PNP Camp Crame photo SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — A mining site allegedly operating outside the bounds of the law was left without its heavy equipment after authorities seized nearly ₱9.57 million worth of machinery and tools during an anti-illegal mining operation in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. The operation, conducted late Thursday evening, July 16, resulted in the recovery of two backhoes, three gasoline-powered water pump engines, a sluice box, a battery, and other equipment believed to have been used in unauthorized mining activities. The joint operation was carried out by police units in Caraga in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Bayugan, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office 13. The confiscated equipment was later turned over to concerned government offices for documentation and proper disposition. The seizure forms part of the Philippine National Police’s intensified campaign against environmental crimes, particularly illegal mining operations that threaten natural resources and local communities. In a statement at the PNP Central Office, PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. praised the operating teams and stressed that protecting the country’s natural resources requires sustained cooperation among law enforcement and environmental agencies. “The environment is the wealth of every Filipino. We will not stop enforcing the law against activities that destroy our natural resources,” Nartatez said. The PNP also encouraged residents to report suspected illegal mining activities and other environmental offenses to authorities to help strengthen enforcement efforts.
