Cops 'recreate' crime scene, thrash man at bus stand where he beat partner to death

(Screengrab)Police in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar beat a man accused of murdering his live-in partner with sticks at the same bus stand where he thrashed the victim to death, shortly after taking him there for a crime-scene reconstruction. A video of the police action has surfaced online.The incident took place during the reconstruction exercise at the Bhavnagar city ST bus stand, where the accused was brought back to retrace the sequence of events.The accused was identified as 20-year-old Faisal, alias Khatki Lakhani. Police arrested him in connection with the death of Kajalben Baraiya, a 40-year-old woman with whom he had been living for a few years.According to police, Kajalben sustained severe injuries after being attacked during an argument at the bus stand on September 3. She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on September 4. The reconstruction was carried out by personnel from the Neelambag police station. The accused was taken to the spot where the assault occurred, so investigators could recreate the sequence of events and understand how the confrontation unfolded.Following the reconstruction, however, the accused was thrashed by police personnel in full public view at the bus stand. Neelambag Police Inspector DP Unadkad is alleged to have participated in the beating. The episode was captured on video, showing the accused surrounded by police personnel and other people at the bus stand, with sticks being used while he was being restrained.The case stems from an altercation between Faisal, Kajalben and her friend Ravi Gohil on the afternoon of September 3. Police said Faisal suspected Kajalben of having a relationship with Ravi. Ravi, however, told investigators that the dispute was related to alcohol consumption.The confrontation escalated into a violent assault. Police said Faisal threw Kajalben to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched her, causing serious injuries to her head and other parts of her body. Ravi attempted to intervene but was also assaulted and suffered injuries.CCTV cameras at the bus stand recorded the attack. The footage reportedly shows the assault continuing for several minutes while people in the vicinity watched the incident.The attached video shows the crime-scene reconstruction and the subsequent handling of the accused at the bus stand.In the footage, several police personnel and other people are seen surrounding the accused near buses at the station. At one point, police personnel appear to use sticks against him as he is restrained and moved around the spot.Police have registered a murder case against Faisal following a complaint by Kajalben’s mother. Investigators have also noted his previous criminal record, including cases related to robbery and physical assault.The investigation is now expected to focus on gathering CCTV footage, witness statements, medical and post-mortem evidence and other material relevant to the murder case.
