Convicted pair offer compensation to injured victim

A man and a woman convicted of seriously injuring a man at the Princess Alice Bus Terminal have indicated their willingness to compensate him as the High Court prepares for sentencing. Jhakira Patrice Matthews of Scotts Terrace, Grazettes, St Michael, and Jurdie Miller of Mile and a Quarter, St Peter, reappeared recently in the No. 5 Supreme Court, where Glen Wilson, the complainant in the matter, indicated that he was willing to accept compensation for his injuries. Following a trial, Matthews was unanimously convicted by a nine-member jury of causing serious bodily harm to Wilson with intent on May 31, 2021, while Miller was found guilty by majority verdict of the lesser charge of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on him. The two were remanded to Dodds Prison. Senior Counsel Maya Kellman prosecuted the case while Matthews and Miller were self-represented. “We have heard of your pain and suffering and we will consider what is the precedent for such,” Justice Pamela Beckles told Wilson, before informing Matthews that she would be required to pay more compensation than Miller as she had been found guilty of the more serious charge. She warned the duo “I want you to see this man and do not approach him. If he comes back and says he got a bad look from you, you are going back from where you came.” Justice Beckles adjourned the case until November 11 for a sentencing submissions hearing to begin, followed by sentencing on November 18.
