A SALAD topper has been recalled over the presence of a potentially fatal bacteria. Customers have been urged to “stay away” from others if they start to experience symptoms. Following an inspection, the organic product which can be used as a garnish for salads and sandwiches, or grown as a microgreen was found to have had the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strain. According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), symptoms of infection include severe bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting or low fever. The agency also warned haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) may develop as a result of infection, which is “a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal”. As a result, customers who may be experiencing the following side effects have been urged to “stay away from work, school or nursery” for at least 48 hours to avoid passing the illness to others. The FSA added that those in possession of the seedlings should not consume or grow them, and any sprouts grown from the product should be disposed of immediately.
