Under the UK Highway Code Rule 196, a flashing amber light at a pedestrian crossing always follows the red stop light. If the amber light is flashing and the crossing is completely clear of pedestrians, drivers may proceed with caution In Spain, however, the flashing amber light can no longer be shown while the pedestrian sees a green figure. In the UK, pedestrians only see a green figure when the traffic light is red. The new law, introduced by Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic, is designed to give pedestrians a clear and protected space to cross. Motorists caught under the new law could face a fine of €200 (£171.40) and four points on their licence, reports Connexion France.
