College cycling stars killed in horror crash with multiple others rushed to hospital with ‘serious injuries’

Milligan University confirmed in a statement that sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were killed in the crash. “We are profoundly shocked and saddened to share that members of our cycling team were in an accident involving a vehicle this morning while cycling in Hampton, TN,” they said. “Sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were killed in this accident. Multiple other Milligan cyclists were also seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Johnson City Medical Center. “There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss. Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy. Please keep the Milligan community in your prayers.” Two of the other injured students were taken to the hospital via helicopter, and four were in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit. “Ballad Health is deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving Milligan University cyclists who were struck by a vehicle in the Hampton area of Carter County this morning. Our prayers are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by this devastating event,” Ballad Health said in a statement. At least one person is being transported by air to Johnson City Medical Center. “Trauma surgeons are at Johnson City Medical Center, and our teams are prepared to respond. What is known is that the driver of the car has been charged with vehicular homicide. “This is an elite cycling team,” Steven R. Finney, the district attorney general for Carter County, said. “It’s not a bunch of those club guys getting together to ride. They know what they’re doing. They rode in a peloton. One of the boys just won last weekend in one of the local races.” John Benfield, 69, faces two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness.
