Coimbatore Corporation puts STP works near Chinnavedampatti lake on hold

The Coimbatore Corporation has temporarily halted the construction of a proposed sewage treatment plant (STP) near Chinnavedampatti lake after residents reiterated their objections to the project during a site inspection by Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja on Wednesday (July 29).The Commissioner visited the project site a day after over 50 residents submitted a representation during the weekly public grievance meeting on Tuesday, seeking suspension of the works and a review of the project.According to sources, the Corporation has decided to keep the construction on hold until discussions are held with officials on the concerns raised by residents. The demands, including shifting the STP to an alternative location, will be examined before a decision is taken on resuming the work.During the inspection, residents and farmers urged the Corporation to relocate the STP away from the lake and alleged procedural lapses in the selection of the present site. They further alleged that the STP was originally proposed at a different location and that the site was subsequently shifted closer to the lake without adequate public consultation or explanation. They sought an inquiry into the process through which the location was finalised and demanded action against officials found responsible if any irregularities were established. They also questioned the structural suitability of constructing the STP on or close to the lake bund.Mr. Ravi Teja heard the residents’ objections during the inspection and said the work would remain on hold until he had examined all details pertaining to the project and the lake.
