LUCENA CITY — Amid the extreme heat and water shortages brought by the El Niño phenomenon, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is encouraging farmers to adopt a simple but effective practice to help protect trees and crops: coconut husk mulching. “One simple yet effective method to help keep trees healthy is the use of coconut husk (bunot ng niyog) as mulch around the base of trees,” the PCA offices for Laguna and Rizal said in a Facebook post. According to the agency, coconut husk mulch helps retain soil moisture by reducing the rapid evaporation of water, especially during periods of intense heat and prolonged dry conditions. It helps suppress weed growth by reducing competition for water and nutrients needed by crops. “[It] improves soil quality. As coconut husk decomposes, it adds organic matter that enhances soil structure and fertility,” the PCA said. The agency added that coconut husk mulching can also help conserve irrigation water because soil moisture lasts longer, reducing the need for frequent watering. Aside from being practical and affordable, the method is also environmentally friendly since coconut husks – often treated as agricultural waste – can be reused as a natural protective layer for plants.
