Clemson QB competition: Dabo Swinney provides latest on Christopher Vizzina, Tait Reynolds

Entering fall camp, there is no definite starting quarterback for Clemson. Head coach Dabo Swinney does admit a couple of guys are fighting for the job, though — Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds. Those two emerged for the Tigers out of spring practice. Now, just a little bit more is needed to show why they should lead the offense on the field Week 1 in Baton Rouge. Swinney was asked where the quarterback competition currently stands on Thursday. He admitted that at one point, Vizzina was in pole position. However, Reynolds has battled to make a case of his own. “Quarterbacks have competed hard,” Swinney said via SportsCenter. “Vizzina went into the spring with the pole position, as we like to say. He’s our most experienced guy but we don’t have a ton of experience there. We like the talent in our room and we like the competition in the room. Tait Reynolds came out of spring as our second guy and now, those two guys have competed all summer. That’ll carry over into camp. “CV has done a great job to this point and showing that he deserves to be the guy going into camp. Tait’s done a great job showing he ain’t going away. He’s going to continue to compete. So, we’ve got great competition.” [ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ] As Swinney mentioned, Vizzina is the more experienced player of the two. He has seen playing time in 14 total games, dating back to the 2023 season. Some stats were even put up in those performances. On 104 passing attempts, Vizzina has thrown for 596 yards and four touchdowns, while adding an interception. Reynolds is a different story, as the first-year player enters his true freshman campaign. Queen Creek (AZ) is where Reynolds played his high school football, being a three-star prospect. He was the No. 510 overall recruit in the 2026 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. As for when somebody will officially win the job, no timeline has been given by Swinney. However, you have to imagine it will be sooner rather than later. Clemson does not have the luxury of letting this bleed into the regular season. They start the year off with a bang, looking to get revenge on LSU in the backend of a home-and-home series.
