Clemson offensive lineman Elyjah Thurmon has been released from the hospital following an overnight stay after taking a hit to the helmet in a game against Florida State, the team announced Sunday afternoon. The hit left Thurmon on the ground, where he was tended to for several minutes by medical personnel. Eventually he was placed onto a backboard and taken out of the stadium, where he headed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He stayed overnight to ensure everything checked out OK, even though most testing had come back positive initially, according to coach Dabo Swinney. He hit the ground and was motionless for several seconds. The TV broadcast cut to commercial break not once, but twice while Thurmon was tended to on the ground. It took some time to give him the proper care before ultimately taking him off the field on a backboard and a cart. “Elyjah Thurmon we believe is the injured Clemson Tiger,” broadcaster Wes Durham said. “And they have been able to get him on the backboard. Seven and a half minutes or so this play occurred. We have confirmed it is Thurman. We’ve seen a replay, we’re not going to show you. Basically it is a head-on play with the linebacker for Florida State toward the end of the run. There is a lot of concern about Elyjah Thurmon. “The folks here have done an unbelievable job attending to him. Both schools represented. And they’re trying to take the utmost caution here with the young man.” As Thurmon was being carted off the field, he was able to put one arm into the air to give a thumbs up signal, a sign that gave great relief to the crowd. Both teams had gathered around Thurmon on the field before he was carted off. The broadcast crew checked in a few minutes after game play had resumed with another update on Elyjah Thurmon. Sideline reporter Madison Fitzpatrick updated viewers with the latest from on the ground. “Well a quick update, Wes, on Thurmon,” Fitzpatrick said. “He went on a stretcher, he got into an ambulance. He will be taken to FSU Health Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, which is about four miles away. His mom is with him, so that was an emotional moment but she is there with him holding his hand.”
