Claim Hindu law is based on 'Manusmriti' wrong, says SG Tushar Mehta

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta clarified that Hindu law in India isn't founded on the Manusmriti but primarily on the Mitakshara school, rooted in the Yajnavalkya Smriti, which has governed inheritance since before 700 AD. The Mitakshara school emphasizes inheritance by birthright, while the Dayabhaga school in Bengal and Assam imposes more restrictions. Mehta highlighted that these laws, including ancient prohibitions on certain relationships, were approved by Parliament, underscoring their legal legitimacy and relevance today.
