CJP accuses government of reneging on deal, warns of fresh protest

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has threatened to resume its nationwide protests, accusing the BJP-led Centre of violating the agreement reached with Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh on July 25 by allowing police action against protesters to continue. The warning marks the biggest escalation in tensions between the two-month-old outfit and the Centre since the CJP called off its 49-day agitation following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The two-month-old outfit demanded the immediate withdrawal of all FIRs against protesters, the release of detained students and an end to what it described as the surveillance and harassment of volunteers. In a post on X, CJP spokesperson Abhishek Ranka alleged that the government had breached its assurance that no punitive action would be taken against protesters. "We are observing a complete breach of the agreement regarding no police action against the protestors. Hundreds of students have been arrested in Bihar and Bengal, and hundreds are being surveilled and harassed in Delhi and other states. Multiple reports are emerging in Delhi regarding the detention of volunteers supporting protestors with logistics," he wrote. The CJP demanded that all FIRs against protesters be withdrawn immediately and that no fresh cases be registered by the Delhi Police, central investigative agencies or police forces in BJP-ruled or BJP-allied states. "Failing which, we will be forced to sit on protest again," the organisation warned. The outfit also sought a written copy of the agreement on legal cases, along with the timelines agreed upon with the Centre, by Wednesday.Ranka's latest statement came days after the CJP officially withdrew its 49-day agitation at Delhi's Jantar Mantar after three rounds of talks with the government's representatives, including Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. The student outfit had said the agreement included the withdrawal of all FIRs filed by the Centre and NDA-ruled states against protesters and organisers, an assurance that no future action would be taken against anyone involved in the agitation, "maximum possible compensation" for the families of NEET paper leak-related suicide victims, and a commitment by the government to consider its five-point examination reform charter.Hours before issuing the fresh warning, another CJP spokesperson, Saurav Das, had flagged reports of students and protesters allegedly being detained or arrested in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar. He said the CJP had suspended its nationwide agitation only after the Centre assured it that no punitive action would be taken against any protester in BJP- or NDA-ruled states."Our decision to suspend the nationwide protest was taken in good faith and solely on the basis of the government's assurance that it would stand by its word," Ranka said.He urged the Centre, particularly Union ministers Nadda and Singh, to honour that assurance by securing the release of those detained and ensuring that no coercive or retaliatory action was taken against protesters anywhere in the country. He also reiterated the demand that all FIRs be withdrawn.Ranka said the Centre had also committed to providing a written guarantee on the issue by Tuesday.Warning that any deviation from the agreement would amount to a breach of trust with both the CJP and "lakhs of young Indians", he said the organisation was closely monitoring the situation and would take "further necessary steps" if those detained were not released and the cases against protesters were not withdrawn.- EndsPublished By: Aprameya RaoPublished On: Jul 27, 2026 17:25 IST
