Zaheen Ahmed, Head of Therapy at alcohol treatment providers The UKAT Group, said: “The data paints a picture of a clear North-South divide. “But it can be as much about policing as partying. “Forces with a tougher stance on alcohol-fuelled disorder will inevitably record more arrests. “Our concern is for young women – regardless of where they live- drinking alcohol to excess. “Binge drinking can leave people extremely vulnerable to accidents, sexual assault and alcohol poisoning. “A good night out should end in getting home safely – not in A&E or a police cell.” A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “The North East is extremely welcoming, attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year in addition to those who already live and work here. “Inevitably, this generates higher demand on policing resources. “And where an individual’s behaviour becomes disorderly or places themselves or others at risk, officers will take appropriate action. “As a Force, our priority is always to protect people and prevent harm.” Comment now
