Citi Strata Premier Card Review: Is The $95 Fee Worth It For 3x Points?

The Citi Strata Premier® Card, previously known as the Citi Premier Card, is one of the most rewarding mid-range credit cards out there, and I think it’s often overlooked. People tend to gravitate toward competing cards from American Express or Chase, but the Citi Strata Premier has a combination of features that’s hard to beat, especially considering that American AAdvantage is a Citi ThankYou transfer partner. For just a $95 annual fee, the Citi Strata Premier offers 3x ThankYou points in five major spending categories, a $100 annual hotel credit, access to all 20 Citi ThankYou transfer partners at the best ratios, and no foreign transaction fees. When you pair it with the no annual fee Citi Double Cash® Card (learn more), it becomes one of the best card combos in the game. This post is my Citi Strata Premier review, so let’s go over everything that makes this card so valuable, including the welcome offer, bonus categories, hotel credit, redemption options, and how to build a winning card strategy around it. Citi Strata Premier® Card Why we like this cardIn my opinion, the Citi Strata Premier® Card offers the most rewarding bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, as the card offers 3x points in multiple categories. I also love Citi ThankYou points, and get huge value by transferring them to airline partners, especially in conjunction with a transfer bonus. The card has a reasonable annual fee, a decent welcome bonus, and no foreign transaction fees, so those are all good things. Strata Premier welcome offer of 60K ThankYou points The Citi Strata Premier is offering a welcome bonus of 60,000 ThankYou points after spending $4,000 within three months. Based on my latest miles & points valuations, Citi ThankYou points are worth 1.7 cents each, so to me the bonus is worth $1,020. That makes it one of the better credit card bonuses available. Those 60,000 points are worth $600 toward travel booked through Citi, or can be transferred to airline and hotel partners for potentially much more value. Since a lot of people don’t have this card yet, these are some easy rewards to pick up. I should mention that we’ve seen bigger offers on this card in the past, so if you’re specifically holding out for the biggest possible bonus, it could be worth waiting. But the current offer is still solid. Link: Learn more about the Citi Strata Premier® Card Redeem Citi ThankYou points for Royal Air Maroc business class Strata Premier eligibility and application rules The welcome bonus on the Citi Strata Premier isn’t available if you’ve ever held this exact card (or the old Citi Premier, as it was previously known). Beyond that, eligibility is independent from other Citi ThankYou cards, so you’re fully eligible even if you already have the Citi Strata℠ Card (learn more) or Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (learn more). I should mention that while this card used to follow a 48-month rule when it comes to qualify for the welcome bonus, that’s no longer the case, and now it’s a “once in a lifetime” rule. Beyond the above, the standard Citi application rules apply, with the most consistent being that you can be approved for at most one Citi card every eight days, and at most two Citi cards every 65 days. The Citi Strata Premier has an annual fee of $95, with no cost for authorized users. In an era of rising credit card fees, paying under $100 a year for this level of rewards and perks is a great deal. Any spending by authorized users contributes to your points balance. When you factor in the $100 annual hotel credit (more on that below), the card can potentially essentially pay for itself. Strata Premier no foreign transaction fees The Citi Strata Premier has no foreign transaction fees, which makes it an excellent card for purchases abroad. You’ll earn 3x points on international dining, hotels, and airfare without extra charges. Use the Citi Strata Premier with no foreign transaction fees Citi Strata Premier points earning structure The Citi Strata Premier really shines when it comes to being able to earn points. The card offers what I’d argue are the best bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, covering five categories that make up a huge chunk of most people’s spending. Strata Premier 3x ThankYou points in five categories When it comes to the Citi Strata Premier bonus categories, the card earns 3x ThankYou points on: Dining: restaurants, cafes, bars, fast food, takeout, and delivery — this generally won’t include bakeries, caterers, or restaurants inside hotels, grocery stores, or department stores Gas and EV charging: gas stations and EV charging stations — this generally won’t include purchases at warehouse clubs, convenience stores, or merchants not classified as gas stations or EV charging Supermarkets: grocery stores and supermarkets — this generally won’t include warehouse clubs, convenience stores, discount stores, specialty vendors, bakeries, or meal kit delivery services Airfare: flights purchased directly with airlines or through a travel agency — this generally includes ticket costs and other fees associated with airline tickets Hotels: hotels booked directly or through a travel agency — this generally includes incidental hotel charges beyond just the room rate There are no caps on how many bonus points you can earn, and these categories apply globally, not just in the United States. Based on my 1.7 cent valuation, earning 3x ThankYou points is like getting a 5.1% return in each of these categories. That’s outstanding for a $95 annual fee card. For most people, dining, gas, and supermarkets alone cover a huge portion of everyday spending, which is what makes this card so effective day-to-day. Earn 3x points on flight purchases with the Citi Strata Premier 10x ThankYou points on Citi Travel bookings The Citi Strata Premier also earns 10x ThankYou points on hotels, rental cars, and attractions, booked through the Citi Travel portal at CitiTravel.com. Based on my valuation, that’s like a 17% return, which is exceptional. That said, this won’t be for everyone. If you’re staying at a major hotel chain, you typically won’t earn hotel loyalty points or receive elite perks on third-party bookings. But if you’re not brand-loyal or you’re staying at an independent hotel, this can be incredibly rewarding. Citi Strata Premier Card ThankYou points redemptions The Citi Strata Premier gives you full access to the Citi ThankYou ecosystem, which means the best possible redemption options. Let’s talk about that in a bit more detail. Transfer ThankYou points to 20 airline and hotel partners The real value of Citi ThankYou points earned on the Citi Strata Premier comes with the ability to transfer ThankYou points to all 20 partners at the best possible ratios, mostly 1:1. I’d argue it’s the most valuable of the “big three” US carrier frequent flyer programs, and Citi ThankYou is the only transferable points currency that offers these transfers. That alone gives the Citi Strata Premier a unique edge. If you also have rewards with Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One, or Chase Ultimate Rewards, there’s some overlap with partners. American AAdvantage access is exclusive to Citi. Transfer Citi ThankYou points to American AAdvantage ThankYou points cash redemption options You can redeem points earned on the Citi Strata Premier toward purchases at up to 1.0 cents per point for travel, or 0.75 cents for cash back. If you also have the Citi Double Cash® Card (learn more), your cash back rate goes up to 1.0 cents per point. This isn’t the most exciting option, but it’s there if you need it. Unlocking points on other Citi cards Having the Citi Strata Premier also upgrades the value of your other Citi ThankYou cards. ThankYou points can be pooled with your Strata Premier points and transferred at the full premium ratios. Without a premium card like this, those cards only transfer at a reduced rate (roughly 30% less). So having this card immediately adds value to cards like the Citi Double Cash® Card (learn more) or Citi Strata℠ Card (learn more). Citi Strata Premier Card benefits & credits The Citi Strata Premier doesn’t have a huge number of benefits and credits, though it does have one potential credit that can more than offset the annual fee. Let’s cover the benefits to be aware of. Strata Premier $100 hotel credit annually Once per calendar year, the Citi Strata Premier gives you $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, when booked with Citi Travel. Here are the key details of the Citi Premier Card hotel credit: Book online at CitiTravel.com or by phone at 1-833-737-1288 The reservation must be made by the primary cardmember, though the stay can be for an authorized user You must pre-pay with your Strata Premier Card, ThankYou points, or a combination If you cancel a booking that used the credit, the benefit stays available for the same calendar year Package rates (air + hotel, hotel + car) don’t qualify Can’t be combined with other thankyou.com promotions What’s nice is that you can also earn 10x points on the hotel spending through Citi Travel, stacking the credit with the bonus points for a really strong deal. Receive a $100 hotel credit annually with the Citi Strata Premier How to use the Strata Premier hotel credit To use the Citi Strata Premier Card hotel credit, log into your account at CitiTravel.com using your Strata Premier credentials. When you search for hotels, you’ll see a prompt asking if you want to apply the $100 credit. Select it, and the discount will automatically appear during checkout. It’s that simple. Being strategic with the Strata Premier hotel credit My biggest tip is to use the Citi Premier Card hotel credit at an independent hotel where you’re not giving up chain loyalty points or elite perks by booking through Citi Travel. Compare prices first. Major hotel chains sometimes offer member-only rates that beat what Citi Travel shows. If you aim for a stay close to the $500 minimum, you’ll get the best return (up to 20% off). For many people, this credit alone can cover the $95 annual fee, which is a big deal. Strata Premier travel protections When the Citi Strata Premier rebranded as the Citi Strata Premier, it gained some useful travel protections like trip cancellation and interruption coverage, trip delay coverage, and lost or damaged luggage protection. The card also offers secondary rental car insurance. Note that you usually need to pay for the relevant travel expenses with your Strata Premier Card to get this coverage, and certain restrictions and limits apply. But having this extra peace of mind, where applicable, is definitely a plus. Other Strata Premier benefits The Citi Strata Premier is a World Elite Mastercard, so it comes with some additional perks like savings with Lyft and Instacart. That’s not going to be the main draw of the card, but it’s worth knowing about. The Citi Strata Premier Card offers the most rewarding bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, in my opinion, as the card offers 3x points in five different categories. I also love Citi ThankYou points, and get huge value by transferring them to airline partners, especially in conjunction with a transfer bonus. The fact that American AAdvantage is a transfer partner also makes the program exciting for many travelers. So I think there’s huge merit to picking up this card, though let’s address a few related points. Citi Strata Premier vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred comparison The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (learn more) is another strong option in the mid-range tier, so it might also be on your short list. Like the Citi Strata Premier Card, it has a $95 annual fee. The Sapphire Preferred has very similar bonus categories to the Strata Premier, too — it offers 5x points on Chase Travel, 3x points on dining, gas stations, EV charging, select vacation home bookings, top streaming services, and online grocery, 2x points on all other travel, and 1x points on all other spending. When it comes to their differences: The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which work with some of the same transfer partners as Citi points, but not all; unlike Citi, Chase’s program has World of Hyatt and United MileagePlus as partners, while only Citi has American AAdvantage, so you’ll want to think about which airline and hotel programs you’re most likely to redeem points with to pick the right ecosystem for you The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers up to $100 in hotel credits each account year for stays booked through Chase Travel, with no minimum stay cost; the Citi Strata Premier’s credit is also $100, but it applies to a single stay of $500 or more, so the Sapphire Preferred credit is easier to use, especially if you don’t book pricier hotel stays regularly The Chase Sapphire Preferred comes with more extras, including a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee credit, a year of complimentary Apple TV, and DoorDash perks Here’s my full comparison of the Strata Premier vs. Sapphire Preferred. Citi Strata Premier Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards comparison The Capital One Venture Rewards Card (learn more) is another popular pick at the $95 price point. Again, your choice between the Venture Rewards Card and the Strata Premier Card may come down to whether you prefer redeeming Capital One miles or Citi ThankYou points. But assuming that’s not a deciding factor, here are the other differences to consider: The Capital One Venture Rewards Card splits the difference between a flat-rate points earning structure and one that’s all about the bonus categories; it earns 5x miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and 2x miles on everything else The Capital One Venture Rewards Card comes with an application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck The Venture Card also offers a $50 experience credit on every Lifestyle Collection hotel booking you make through Capital One If you value simplicity or your purchases tend to fall outside of the Citi Strata Premier Card’s most rewarding categories, knowing you’re getting a minimum of 2x on all your spending with the Capital One Venture Rewards Card is great. If extra benefits like a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck are important to you, the Venture Rewards Card might pull ahead too. But when it comes to points earning potential, I think the Citi Strata Premier Card is the clear winner. The Capital One Venture is great for everyday spending Building the best Citi Strata card strategy The Citi Strata Premier is excellent on its own, but it becomes even more powerful when paired with the right companion cards. Strata Premier + Citi Double Cash (best value combo) I consider the $95 annual fee Citi Strata Premier and no annual fee Citi Double Cash® Card (learn more) to be one of the best card combos, given that the latter card earns 2x ThankYou points on all purchases (1x when you buy, 1x when you pay). If you pair it with the Strata Premier, you can earn: 3x points on dining, gas, EV charging, supermarkets, airfare, and hotels 2x points on everything else Full access to all 20 transfer partners at the best ratios Total annual fees: just $95 That means you’re earning at least 2x transferable points on every single dollar you spend. For those looking to earn AAdvantage miles, getting 2x miles on everyday spending is pretty amazing. It could even be worth paying taxes with the card, as a way to generate AAdvantage miles for under one cent each. Strata Premier + Citi Strata Card (bonus category maximizer) The no annual fee Citi Strata℠ Card (learn more) adds 3x points on transit, gas, and a self-select category (like streaming or fitness), plus 5x on Citi Travel bookings. If you want to stack even more bonus categories on top of what the Citi Strata Premier offers, this is a solid addition. Link: Apply for the no annual fee Citi Strata Card What about the Citi Strata Elite? The $595 Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (learn more) is a different kind of product from the Citi Strata Premier. Its bonus categories aren’t quite as well-rounded as the Strata Premier’s. It offers 6-12x points on Citi Travel bookings, 3-6x points on dining, and 1.5x points on everything else. Where the Strata Elite stands out is in its perks, including Priority Pass lounge access, four annual Admirals Club day passes, up to $300 in annual hotel credits, up to $200 in Splurge credits, and up to $200 in Blacklane credits. If you can take advantage of those credits and lounge access, the Strata Elite could be worth it. But for most people, the Strata Premier is the easier card to justify. You could also consider having both, and getting the Strata Elite for its perks, and the Strata Premier for its superior everyday earning structure. Link: Apply for the Citi Strata Elite Card, or read a comparison review of Strata Premier vs. Strata Elite Get Admirals Club lounge passes with the Citi Strata Elite Citi Strata Premier Card FAQs Is the Citi Strata Premier $95 annual fee worth it? In most cases, the Citi Strata Premier Card is worth the annual fee. The $100 annual hotel credit alone can cover the fee if you book a hotel stay of $500 or more through Citi Travel. Beyond that, the 3x earning rate on everyday categories like dining, gas, and supermarkets means you’re accumulating points much faster than you would with a free card. If you value ThankYou points at 1.7 cents each, you only need to spend about $1,900 per year in bonus categories to earn back $95 in value, and most people spend far more than that. How does the Citi Strata Premier $100 annual hotel credit work? With the Citi Strata Premier Card’s annual hotel credit, once per calendar year, you get $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (before taxes) when booking through CitiTravel.com. If you cancel, the credit becomes available again for the same year. You can also stack it with the 10x Citi Travel earning rate for extra value. Is the Citi Strata Premier better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred? Both the Citi Strata Premier and the Chase Sapphire Preferred are strong mid-range cards with $95 annual fees and similar bonus categories. The Strata Premier earns 3x on five everyday categories (dining, gas, supermarkets, airfare, and hotels) and is the only way to transfer points to American AAdvantage. The Sapphire Preferred has an easier-to-use $100 hotel credit and more extras, like a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, plus access to Hyatt and United through Chase. For everyday earning power, I give the Strata Premier the edge. Can I earn American AAdvantage miles with the Citi Strata Premier? You can earn AAdvantage miles with the Citi Strata Premier, and this is one of the card’s biggest draws. Citi ThankYou is the only transferable points currency that lets you transfer to American AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio. So every 3x points you earn on dining, gas, or supermarkets can become 3 AAdvantage miles. Pair the Strata Premier with the Citi Double Cash for 2x AAdvantage miles on all other spending. Should I get the Citi Strata Premier or the Citi Strata Elite? For most people, the Citi Strata Premier Card is a better value than the Citi Strata Elite Card. It has more well-rounded bonus categories, a lower annual fee ($95 vs. $595), and unlocks the same full access to transfer partners. The Strata Elite makes sense if you travel frequently and can take advantage of lounge access, the $300 hotel credit, and other premium perks. Some people may even want both. The Strata Elite is great for perks, while the Strata Premier is solid for everyday earning. Does the Citi Strata Premier give you lounge access? No, the Citi Strata Premier card doesn’t offer airport lounge access. That type of benefit is rare on a card with a $95 annual fee, though. It’s more common on premium credit cards such as the Citi Strata Elite. What credit score do I need to be approved for the Citi Strata Premier Card? Citi doesn’t share specific credit score requirements for the Strata Premier Card, but having a credit score in the good to excellent range should give you strong approval odds. What is the Citi Premier Card? The Citi Premier Card has been rebranded as the Citi Strata Premier Card. So if you’re looking for the Citi Premier Card, you’ll really want to apply for the Citi Strata Premier Card. Bottom line The Citi Strata Premier (formerly known as the Citi Premier Card) is an underrated mid-range card that deserves a lot more attention. For $95 per year, you get 3x points in five categories that cover most of your everyday spending, a $100 hotel credit that can pay for the annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and full access to 20 ThankYou transfer partners, including American AAdvantage. Pair it with the Citi Double Cash Card for 2x points on everything else, and you’ve got one of the best card duos available. You’ll earn 2-3x transferable points on all your spending for under $100 in total annual fees. With the ThankYou ecosystem stronger than ever, the Citi Strata Premier is the card that ties it all together. Whether you’re looking to earn cash back, airline miles, or hotel points, this card gives you the flexibility and earning power to make it happen.
