Chris Mason Steps Down As Btrfs Co-Maintainer, Departing Meta

Longtime Linux kernel developer Chris Mason is departing Meta. In the process of doing so, he is also stepping down from his co-maintainership role of the Btrfs file-system. Chris Mason started the Btrfs file-system back in 2007 while working for Oracle at the time. Mason hasn't been as active in a maintainership role for Btrfs in more recent years with David Sterba of SUSE serving as principal maintainer. Given that Sterba has been effectively driving Btrfs maintainership for years, it's not too surprising that Mason is now formally removing himself as a listed maintainer of Btrfs. Instead, Mason will be a code reviewer for Btrfs moving forward. While at Meta, Mason has helped in the Btrfs file-system usage by Meta/Facebook. Plus Mason has made many other contributions to Meta infrastructure as part of their Linux kernel team. To some surprise, he announced on the Linux kernel mailing list on Thursday that he will be leaving Meta on Friday. Due to his Meta/Facebook emails going inactive, he was updating his MAINTAINERS entry and thus in turn decided to step down as a listed Btrfs co-maintainer. Chris Mason didn't reveal his future plans but did comment in the LKML post: "My last day at Meta is Aug 28, so my meta.com/fb.com emails will stop working soon. Meta's commitment to the kernel and btrfs isn't changing, and my own kernel contributions will continue as well. This update better reflects that I handed off most of the btrfs maintainership duties years ago. Many thanks to David Sterba, and all of the btrfs developers for their work moving the filesystem forward." Thankfully his Linux kernel contributions will continue wherever he is going next. Besides Btrfs, in recent years Chris Mason has also been working on AI code review for the Linux kernel and related AI initiatives.
