The Rotten Tomatoes audience verdict is in for the last Chris Evans movie before Avengers: Doomsday. Evans was not included in the original Avengers: Doomsday cast confirmed in March 2025. However, the movie's first teaser trailer released in December confirmed that he would be reprising the role of Steve Rogers for the film after seemingly playing him for the last time in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. An official trailer showed Steve reuniting with a shocked Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and summoning Mjölnir, proving he is still worthy. Now, Evans' last movie before Avengers: Doomsday, Sacrifice, has debuted to a 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 50 ratings after debuting on Netflix. The score may change as more ratings are added, but it is almost the same as the critics' score, which is 38%, and it has remained in that range since premiering around a year ago at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Sacrifice features Evans in the role of Mike Tyler, a movie star who attempts to stage a career comeback by attending an environmental charity gala. However, he and several others at the event are kidnapped by Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy), who believes, due to a prophecy, that three people must be sacrificed to a volcano if humanity is to be saved. The cast also includes Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich, and Charli XCX. Many of the audience reviews express being initially excited by the cast, only to be let down by a lackluster plot, writing, and direction that struggle to be entertaining or meaningful. Other reviews cite confusion over why actors like Evans and Taylor-Joy signed onto this film that does not live up to their acting potential. The handful of positive responses focus more on how the movie's themes resonated with them, along with appreciation for the humor and the performances by Evans and Taylor-Joy. In ScreenRant's Sacrifice review, Mae Abdulbaki gave the movie four out of 10 stars, explaining that the satire gets off to a promising start as "the laughs, primarily thanks to Evans’ comedic timing and physical humor, as well as the sheer mayhem, come quickly and often at first." However, as the film progresses, "there’s so much going on, and it struggles to keep focus and maintain balance between all of its moving parts." As for the performances of the two main stars, Abdulbaki writes that "Chris Evans is wildly funny as a flailing actor who’s not the brightest, and his scenes, especially at first, are the most entertaining. Anya Taylor-Joy is solid throughout, though her story could’ve used some further development." Sacrifice was filmed in various locations across Greece, including a volcano in Santorini and a marble quarry in the city of Volakas. One audience review argues that the movie does not take advantage of this due to how much of the story takes place inside the gala or the volcano and without capturing more of the striking country where production took place. This is Evans' second movie in a row to receive "Rotten" scores from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, following a 44% Tomatometer and 39% Popcornmeter for Honey Don't! Based on the high expectations and record-breaking ticket pre-sales for Avengers: Doomsday, it would come as a surprise if it continues the actor's "Rotten" streak, and will likely be his first "Fresh" release since Materialists. The Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, making its theatrical debut on December 18, will also bring him back to the mainstream after Sacrifice being more of a niche movie going to Netflix instead of theaters.
