DeepSeek is going through what it's calling an “unprecedented” hiring spree. But it is not looking for more AI researchers this time. The Chinese AI company wants around 150 senior backend engineers to help rebuild systems that are struggling under the weight of its growing user base and increasingly demanding AI workloads.Cui Tianyi, who joined DeepSeek in March to lead its Harness team, announced the hiring plan in a social media post. He said the company is dealing with rapid growth in data volumes, machines, training workloads and active users. “In computing, once anything scales up in quantity, it leads to a massive increase in complexity,” he wrote.Cui said DeepSeek’s existing backend infrastructure is reaching its limits and needs to be extensively upgraded, maintained and rewritten.DeepSeek wants to strengthen the backendThe 150 new positions will focus on two main areas. The first involves server-side development for large-language-model research platforms, AI agent frameworks, internal infrastructure, public API services and data engineering. The second will focus on elastic computing infrastructure. This includes maintaining agent platforms and optimising lower-level systems so that computing resources can keep up with changing workloads.AI agents are partly responsible for the growing pressure. Unlike a regular chatbot that may respond to a single prompt, an agent can make repeated model calls and use its own computing environment to complete a task. That means much more work for the servers running behind the scenes. The hiring push comes after DeepSeek said in June that it planned to at least double the size of every department. The company has also recently increased its API prices as Chinese AI companies battle it out in a fierce price war. There is more happening behind the scenes. DeepSeek is reportedly nearing a funding round that could value the company at around 500 billion yuan, or about $74.5 billion, ahead of a possible listing on Shanghai’s Star Market.Meanwhile, DeepSeek has also started beta testing its V4.1 Flash model. The company says the new model uses a new architecture with native multimodal support and is “stronger, faster and cheaper”For DeepSeek, then, the next big challenge may not simply be building smarter AI. It is making sure the plumbing underneath can handle everything that smarter AI brings with it.- EndsPublished On: Sep 8, 2026 18:30 IST
