CHINA’S best-selling car brand is recalling more than 32,000 vehicles over fears the wheels could fall off. The affected motors were all built between August 2024 and June 2026. More than 30,000 Shark 6 vehicles are being recalled over safety fears Credit: Alamy Chinese automaker BYD is recalling a total of 32,009 Shark 6 models in Australia after concerns emerged over the safety of the spare wheel. The firm said abnormal cable wear can cause the spare wheel on the vehicle to fall off, leading to a hazard on the roads. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! The Shark 6 is due to go on sale in the UK later this year. The recall notice reportedly comes after a number of complaints from BYD owners on online forums about concerns with the spare wheel. In a statement, BYD said: “For involved vehicles, BYD has identified that in certain circumstances, incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable. “Continued movement and friction during vehicle operation may cause the cable to fail, resulting in spare wheel detachment. “This may create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death.” The Chinese car giant is going from strength to strength in the UK. Most read in Motors The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed the brand sold 21,337 in the UK in the first quarter of 2026. March this year was a record-breaking month for BYD, with the brand selling 15,162 cars, according to the SMMT. A spokesperson for BYD in the UK told The Sun the recall only applies to models in Australia and would not affect the Shark 6 when it goes on sale in the UK. They added: “Cars for UK launch later this year will be from a production run where the spare wheel element has already been remedied.” Comment now
