China-made C919 aircraft set for first international commercial flight next month

The domestically produced C919 passenger jet is slated to make its international commercial debut next month, with Mongolia as its first destination. The daily service connecting Beijing and the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar will begin on Aug. 12, offering one round-trip flight per day, Xinhua reported.Air China currently operates the aircraft daily on the Beijing–Hong Kong route, having received 12 C919s so far. As of the end of April this year, the aircraft had completed over 42,000 commercial passenger flights, primarily flown by Chinese airlines.Developed and manufactured by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the C919 is the country's first domestically built passenger jet.The standard version seats between 158 and 192 passengers and boasts a range of 4,075 to 5,555 kilometers. The first C919 rolled off the production line in November 2015 and completed its maiden flight in May 2017, according to the Global Times.The aircraft secured certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in September 2022, paving the way for its first customer delivery that December. Its inaugural commercial flight took place shortly after, in May 2023.The C919 represents China's broader ambition to reduce its reliance on Western technology and claim a larger share of its vast domestic aviation market, according to Reuters.While the global civil aviation industry is experiencing a rapid surge in travel demand, the manufacturing sector remains dominated by just a few key players.The United States' Boeing and Europe's Airbus lead the market, while Brazil's Embraer holds the position of the world’s third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer, albeit lagging significantly behind the top two.The C919's direct competitors are narrow-body aircraft designed for short- and medium-haul routes, such as the Airbus A320neo and the Boeing 737 MAX, Reuters said.COMAC is expanding the C919 family. In addition to the standard and long-range models, the company is developing the C919-600, a shorter-fuselage variant tailored for high-altitude airports and harsh terrain conditions.However, industry analysts point out a notable caveat: while COMAC promotes the C919 as China's first domestically developed commercial aircraft, many of its critical systems still rely heavily on foreign suppliers.
