China commissions world’s largest data center campus built for 2 GW, 1M accelerators

Green energy company Envision Energy, which develops renewable power and energy storage technologies, has commissioned a large-scale computing campus in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. The Envision Galaxy Campus combines renewable power, energy storage and high-density computing and is planned to scale beyond 2 GW of capacity. At the center of the campus is a 120,000-square-meter computing facility, an area roughly equivalent to 20 standard football pitches. Envision describes it as the world’s largest single AI data center building, although the facility is still being built out to its full planned capacity. The building is designed to eventually house up to one million AI accelerators and deliver one million PFLOPS of computing power. It will receive electricity directly from renewable energy sources and use Envision’s proprietary AI Power System to manage the large amount of power required by the computing hardware. The company says the facility is designed to deliver up to 10 times more compute output per square meter than conventional data centers. Its power system combines renewable generation, transmission infrastructure and large-scale energy storage to keep electricity available for the computing load. Green power meets massive compute The campus is located in Ulanqab, a region that has developed into a major digital infrastructure hub. Its existing connectivity is intended to support large computing clusters that can contain hundreds of thousands of accelerators and require high-speed, low-latency networks. The location also gives the project access to wind and solar resources. Rather than treating electricity as a separate input to the data center, Envision is connecting renewable generation and power management directly to the computing infrastructure. “Supporting a million accelerators requires a purpose-built AI Power System that integrates renewable generation, dedicated transmission infrastructure, and large-scale energy storage to deliver stable, low-cost green power,” said Ricky Zheng, General Manager of Envision’s AIDC (AI Data Center). The approach is aimed at addressing two major constraints facing large computing facilities: the amount of electricity they consume and the difficulty of supplying that power reliably as computing clusters become larger. Envision says the Galaxy Campus can scale to more than 2 GW, putting it in the same power-demand category as a large industrial facility. The company is designing the infrastructure around the computing load from the outset, rather than adding computing capacity to a conventional data center. One campus, million accelerators The project is also part of Envision’s broader Mission Gobi initiative, which was unveiled at VivaTech in Paris in June 2026. The initiative targets 5 GW of green computing capacity in desert and arid regions worldwide by 2030. “The next frontier of AI is infrastructure,” added Zheng. “As AI models become larger and more compute-intensive, the limiting factors are increasingly power availability, network performance and energy efficiency.” The Galaxy Campus is intended to serve hyperscalers, technology companies and other computing-intensive users that need large amounts of processing capacity. Its design combines the computing facility, renewable electricity, transmission and storage into a single infrastructure project. If the campus reaches its planned scale, its one million accelerators and one million PFLOPS of computing capacity would make it one of the largest single-site computing deployments announced to date.
