China Bets on Ultra-Deep Shale Gas to Boost Energy Security

China is intensifying its efforts to boost energy security by ramping up exploration for ultra-deep shale gas in the Sichuan basin. The state-owned oil and gas major Sinopec aims to raise shale gas production by a third over the next decade, despite current output falling short of government targets. With shale gas making up only a tenth of China’s total natural gas production, this move is crucial as Beijing aims for shale gas to reach 80 to 100 billion cubic meters by 2030, underscoring the nation's commitment to reducing reliance on imported energy sources.
