Child, 4, drowns to death in swimming pool while parents swam in the sea as couple arrested in Brit holiday hotspot

A FOUR-year-old boy has been found dead at a beach bar swimming pool in Greece. The child’s parents – who were taking a dip in the sea when the tragedy occurred – have been hauled in for questioning. A bar employee dived in and pulled the boy out, before paramedics rushed to the scene. The bar owner is listed as the establishment’s lifeguard. Efforts were made to resuscitate the child, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. A probe has been launched to determine how the four-year-old ended up in the pool and what happened in the minutes leading up to the tragedy. Police are understood to be questioning the bar owner and boy’s parents as part of a preliminary investigation. It comes after Spain was hit with a spate of child drownings earlier in the summer. Sebastián Quintana, an expert in drowning prevention, lambasted a “tragic lack of supervision” and warned holidaymakers to keep an eye on their kids at beaches and in pools. In almost all of the cases, the parents were absent when their child drowned. Quintana warned: “The lack of attention, supervision, or even absence at the bathing area by the adults in charge is the main cause of these human tragedies. “A child won’t scream for help. Drowning is a very quick and silent event.” One of the victim’s was tragic Eleri Ellesmere, 3, who drowned while on holiday with her parents in Majorca. Desperate family members battled to save her at Villa Francisca before she was rushed to hospital. But she could not be saved and was declared dead the following day. Paying tribute, Eleri’s heartbroken mum Cerys said: “What should have been an idyllic family holiday has turned into every parent’s worst nightmare. A nightmare we cannot wake up from. “Our precious little Eleri Fairy was involved in an accident during the holiday. “Unfortunately, despite unbelievable effort and attempts to heal our little girl made by us and the Palma health services, we were left with her on life sustaining support. “Me and Joe were with her every single second and our little girl showed incomprehensible strength to try and stay with us. This was not enough.” Less than a month after the shocking series of deaths, a six-year-old Belgian boy drowned while on a family holiday in Barcelona.
