Chicago Fire Original Character Exit Spoils Season 15’s Tragedy Twist

An era is ending on Chicago Fire in the upcoming fifteenth season. The founding One Chicago drama returns in NBC's complete fall 2026 schedule, the heroes of Firehouse 51 will lose one of their own. Joe Miñoso, who has been playing Joe Cruz since the very beginning of the show, is exiting the show early in season 15. Normally, an actor's departure in the wake of a massive, life-or-death cliffhanger might be a sign that their character is being killed off, but the news about Cruz spoils the new season in a totally different way. Miñoso won't just be abruptly absent when Chicago Fire season 15 kicks off this fall. The actor is set to return for the premiere, as well as a limited number of episodes to tie off loose strings of his storyline. The series did something similar with Daniel Kyri's exit as Darren Ritter, although he only returned for two episodes of season 14. An exact number for Miñoso hasn't been confirmed at the time of writing, but a character with as much history as Cruz likely needs more than two episodes to say goodbye. As usual when Chicago Fire writes out a character early in a season, a new firefighter is already set to step up. Da'Vinchi, who is best known for roles in All American and BMF, will be a series regular in season 15. He'll play Marcus Burke, a firefighter candidate who comes to Firehouse 51. The show hasn't had a candidate as a main character since Charlie Barnett's Peter Mills in the first three seasons, and Marcus will come to 51 with a streak of defiance to go with his sense of humor. The character clearly won't be Cruz 2.0, so Fire isn't just replacing the longtime character with a carbon copy. Cruz's Chicago Fire Season 15 Exit Story Rules Out His Death Peter Gordon/NBC When last seen, Joe Cruz was is serious danger. Like most of the other heroes of Firehouse 51, he was trapped inside of a burning warehouse when an explosion brought down the roof. The season 14 finale ended without confirming who lived and who died, other than Violet, Novak, and Pascal, who were safely outside the building when the roof came down. Nine characters were unaccounted for, including Cruz. Considering that Chicago Fire had just given Cruz some good news about his wife's pregnancy, he seemed like a prime candidate to be killed off for the maximum amount of tragedy. Now, fans can presumably stop worrying that the Squad 3 firefighter will perish in the warehouse fire. Joe Miñoso hasn't commented just yet, but he did repost a new article about his exit on Instagram, which seems like confirmation of the report that he'll be back for multiple episodes. Cruz won't be killed off, if Miñoso has more episodes beyond the premiere left. There are now plenty of safer reasons why Cruz will leave Firehouse 51. Chloe has struggled with the stress of having a firefighter for a husband throughout their relationship, and it's possible that he'll be ready to step back into a safer job now that they have twin girls on the way to join their two sons. It's also possible that he'll be officially promoted to lieutenant status, and have to be transferred out of 51 to work as an officer in the CFD, since Severide is already the officer on Squad. His exit may be sad for fans, but he'll likely be alive and well when it happens. Who Else Might Die From Chicago Fire Season 14's Cliffhanger Everett The downside of getting confirmation that Cruz won't be killed off is that the odds just got worse for all the other firefighters who were trapped in the burning warehouse. Eight more characters were unaccounted for when the credits rolled on season 14: Severide, Kidd, Herrmann, Mouch, Capp, Tony, Vasquez, and Ballard. That said, Severide and Kidd were never likely to die in a cliffhanger, and Deadline reported in May that Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo were set to return for season 15. Capp and Tony seemed likely to survive as well, since their deaths would be emotional but not pack as heavy an emotional punch as some of the others who were in mortal peril. Herrmann, Vasquez, and Ballard seemed to be in the most danger, since they were attempting to flee the roof before it collapsed, only to be engulfed by a plume of fire. Cruz and Mouch were both inside of the warehouse when the roof came down, so it's hard to say what their status might be when season 15 picks up. Of course, there's no guarantee that Chicago Fire will kill anybody off in the wake of the cliffhanger, but the explosion was bad enough that it won't be hard to believe if somebody does die. Ballard, played by Leroy Williams III, still seems the most likely to perish. He only joined the Firehouse 51 crew in season 14, and he was never even a big enough character on Kidd's Truck 81 crew to be given a first name. Still, the only thing that is certain at this point is that Cruz will survive beyond Chicago Fire's season 15 premiere, along with Severide and Kidd.
