The transfer means Bannister is now being treated as a patient rather than a prisoner, and has round-the-clock access to nurses and psychologists. It is not clear which psychiatric hospital he was moved into — but the transfer brought him under the care of NHS England instead of the Prison Service. It will cost the taxpayer between £165,000 and £300,000 per year — compared to the £60,000 cost of a prison place. Bannister was jailed for a year last September for leaving pop star Cheryl “terrified” by turning up for a fourth time at the house she shares with nine-year-old son Bear. He had breached a restraining order already placed on him. He was released from prison — but was put back behind bars in January after he was discovered to have alcohol in a bail hostel, which was a breach of his conditions. One of Bannister’s offences took place weeks after Cheryl attended Liam’s funeral. A court last year was told Bannister believed Cheryl had invited him to her home when he turned up on one occasion. In 2012, he was jailed for 30 months for the manslaughter of Rajendra Patel, 48, after attacking her at a YMCA hotel in Croydon, South London. The Ministry of Justice last night declined to comment.
