Chennai Corporation prepares DPRs for upgrading 160 km of roads at ₹150 crore

(File photo) | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has prepared detailed project reports for upgrading 160 km of damaged bus routes and interior roads, covering 780 roads at an estimated cost of ₹150 crore, and has sent the proposals to the State government for administrative approval. The proposals are being processed under the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development and Urban Mission (CMIUDM).The first phase covers 45.13 km of 66 bus route roads and 114.87 km of 714 interior roads across all 15 zones. The projects are part of the State Government’s 2026-27 announcement to upgrade 360 km of bus route and interior roads in Chennai at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore., Commissioner G.S. Sameeran announced on Thursday. These are being taken up based on the Chief Minister’s announcement under Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.The project estimates will be examined by the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO), following which the approval process will be taken forward. “DPRs are prepared and being appraised by TUFIDCO and will be presented to the State-level approval committee for CMIUDM on September 29, 2026,” he added.According to the Chennai Corporation, tenders will be called immediately after necessary approvals, and the road improvement works will be taken up before the onset of Northeast monsoon.The GCC currently maintains 488 bus route roads covering 418.56 km and 35,978 interior roads covering 5,653.89 km. Works including road construction and improvement, footpaths and junction improvements are being carried out through the Chennai Corporation’s Bus Route Roads Department.
