Chelsea ratings: Jorrel Hato hooked after disastrous 45 minutes as Cole Palmer leads Blues’ frightening new attack

HIGH-FLYING Chelsea were handed a reality check as they were held to a 2-2 draw with Premier League newcomers Hull at Stamford Bridge. A pair of goals from Mohamed Belloumi equalled strikes from Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro to keep the post-promotion party going in East Yorkshire. Here’s how SunSport’s Jack Rosser rated the Blues at Stamford Bridge… Emiliano Martinez – 5 The Argentine was signed to solve Chelsea’s problems between the sticks, but kept them going here. Martinez raced out of his goal to try and claim the ball from the corner which led to Belloumi’s second goal of the afternoon, but missed the ball completely. Chelsea need a consistent performer who the back four can trust in goal, but don’t seem to be there yet. Malo Gusto – 5 Another rough day for Chelsea’s defence and the Frenchman’s display rather summed it up. Gusto was popping up all over the back four as well as in midfield at times – seemingly without much of a plan as to what he was doing there. Levi Colwill – 6 Far from an eye-catching performance but stepped in at times to clean up some ugly moments at the back when everything was going wrong around him. A slow start to the season from the academy graduate, but clearly more trusted by Alonso given Maxence Lacroix was dropped to the bench. Wesley Fofana – 5 Dragged towards the ball a little too much during the first half spell in which Hull stunned the Blues, leaving others exposed. Tried to get Chelsea going again after the break with some driving runs from the back. Jorrel Hato – 4 A disastrous first half which led to the youngster being replaced at the break. Hato was caught under a bouncing ball for Hull’s first goal and dragged all over the place by the Tigers before Alonso made the call to hook him early. Reece James – 6 Again starting in the midfield two, James was tasked with covering as much ground as possible, to his detriment. Romeo Lavia – 5 A rather unremarkable afternoon from the midfielder, who started alongside skipper James in a midfield two. Neat enough on the ball but not able to cause much trouble going forwards with his passing. The Blues are seriously missing the presence of Moises Caicedo. Pedro Neto – 4 Handed a new contract on Friday but followed it up with a very frustrating performance. The Portugal international was pushed forwards a touch from wing-back to right-wing but did not make any sort of impression or cause the Tigers back line much trouble. Often a reliable player, but Chelsea have plenty of options to play out wide and performances like that will not help. Cole Palmer – 7 Palmer was involved in both goals, first finding Pedro from the right in the build up to Rogers’ opener in a move which saw the entire front three combine – before setting up Pedro for the second. Morgan Rogers snuck in an opener at the near post Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Palmer pushed to make something happen after the break too, popping up in pockets and seeing a shot fizz wide of the far post. Should have done much better when found in space in the box, only to delay a shot and lift it well over the bar. Morgan Rogers – 7 Rogers’ fine start to life as the most expensive British player in history continued with a very well taken strike after just seven minutes. The winger drifted past Regan Slater with ease before catching the keeper out with a powerful effort to the near post on his weaker foot. Quieter from then on but another decent afternoon for the summer signing. Joao Pedro – 7 What felt like a slight dip in performance from Pedro still ended with a goal and an assist for the Brazilian. Alonso compared him to Karim Benzema and talked him up as being as good as Erling Haaland this week, which could well have ended his fine form – but the clever near post finish backed up the hype. This was not an awe-inspiring display, but so long as the numbers keep ticking up Pedro will be happy. Joao Pedro continued his efficient form in front of goal Credit: Getty Substitutes Pep Chavarria (for Hato 45′) – 6 Settled the left hand side well after Hato’s first half horror show, though the summer signing offered little on the ball. Valentin Barco (for Lavia 70′) – 6 Loudly booed by the travelling Hull fans, something he will have to get used to playing here after the World Cup, Barco snapped into a few challenges and added a bit of bite to midfield. Danny Welbeck (for Gusto 78′) – 5 Offered another focal point alongside Pedro and tried to pick his team-mates up in pursuit of a late winner but could not make a mark himself.
