Chelsea flop Jamie Gittens ‘lined up for shock Roma transfer’ just one year after winger’s £52million move

CHELSEA flop Jamie Gittens could be heading for a shock Roma exit just one year after his big-money move to Stamford Bridge. The Italian giants are understood to be keen to get the deal done quickly. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! However, financial restrictions mean Roma must tread carefully, with the club operating a wage ceiling of around £3million net per year, barring exceptional cases. Antonio Nusa had previously been one of Gasperini’s preferred targets. But that move has cooled with RB Leipzig valuing the Norwegian at around £50m, a price Roma are unwilling to meet. That has seen Lyon winger Malick Fofana and Gittens rise up the shortlist. Fofana is valued at around £40m, although Roma are hoping they can negotiate a lower fee. And sporting director Tony D’Amico is also keeping a close eye on Gittens. The England U21 international only arrived at Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund last summer in a deal worth around £52m. But his time in West London has failed to go entirely to plan, and Roma could now offer him a route out. A permanent deal would be difficult for the Serie A club to finance, but a loan could be explored if Chelsea are prepared to sanction one. The Blues could still wave goodbye to up to 15 players before the summer transfer window closes, with as many as 10 potentially leaving on loan. Chelsea have already done much of their incoming business, meaning the focus is now firmly on trimming Xabi Alonso‘s squad. Several players who have found themselves on the fringes in recent seasons need permanent homes, while a number of highly-rated academy stars require regular senior football to continue their development. With Chelsea expected to play just once a week this season, Alonso will have more time to work with his squad. But keeping a bloated group of players happy could prove a major challenge. Crystal Palace have been linked with the defender as they look for a replacement for Maxence Lacroix, while several Serie A clubs are also understood to be monitoring him. Tosin Adarabioyo Tosin was one of Chelsea’s most experienced players last season after arriving on a free transfer from Fulham. But he could now find himself surplus to requirements. Alonso is reportedly looking for four or five centre-backs, and Tosin’s position in the pecking order is far from secure. A loan deal containing an option to buy has reportedly been discussed as Chelsea look to move the French defender on. Trevoh Chalobah Chalobah is closing in on a move to Cesc Fabregas‘ Como. The defender could even find himself facing Arsenal in his new club’s first game next Wednesday. Wesley Fofana Fofana could yet remain at Stamford Bridge, particularly with Chelsea needing to trim their defensive options. Barcelona and Roma have both been linked with the Frenchman, but he could be given one final opportunity to resurrect his Blues career. Malo Gusto Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly shown an interest in the versatile Frenchman. Chelsea are believed to want around £75m for Gusto, while the arrival of Marco Palestra could further cast doubt over his future. Romeo Lavia Lavia is still waiting to complete a full 90 minutes for Chelsea. Monaco are reportedly interested in the Belgian midfielder, whose enormous potential has repeatedly been undermined by his injury problems. Alonso needs players he can rely on, making Lavia’s fitness record a major concern. Enzo Fernandez Fernandez was linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, only for the Spanish giants to publicly distance themselves from the possibility. The Argentine now finds himself in something of a transfer limbo. Chelsea are reportedly demanding around £120m for their midfielder, but there are currently no serious suitors willing to meet that valuation. However, Manchester City are understood to be interested in the Portugal international. Chelsea would reportedly consider a sale if their £70m valuation is met. Liam Delap Delap is one of four out-and-out strikers on Chelsea’s potential departure list. Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds and Newcastle have all been linked with the forward, although none are currently close to agreeing a deal. Nicolas Jackson Chelsea want around £65m for Jackson. The Senegal international has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs as well as teams across Europe, leaving the door open for a late-window exit. Marc Guiu Guiu was at the centre of one of the strangest transfer sagas of last summer when Chelsea brought him back from his loan spell at Sunderland. But the club now have younger and more highly-rated options up front, making a permanent departure a logical next step for the striker. And with Chelsea facing a major squad reshuffle before the window closes, Gittens could be one of the most intriguing names to watch. The winger only arrived for a huge fee last summer — but Roma’s interest suggests his Stamford Bridge future may already be in serious doubt. Comment now
