A violent Iowa fugitive cooked up a new life as a San Diego chef, even appearing on local TV under an alias, until his nearly 14-year run ended this week.Brian Anthony Williams, 50, was arrested without incident Tuesday at a business in San Diego’s Mission Beach neighborhood, where authorities say he had been living as “Troy Williams” and working as a chef at a local Caribbean restaurant, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Williams had been wanted since October 2012 in connection with the alleged kidnapping, assault and shooting of a woman in Davenport, Iowa. He faces charges including first-degree kidnapping, assault causing serious injury, conspiracy to commit a felony and first-degree arson. He was later also charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.For more than a decade, Williams stayed out of reach while building a new life thousands of miles away. They found local news reports featuring “Troy Williams,” including his appearances as a chef, which helped investigators confirm they had found the Iowa fugitive.Williams’ new life in California came nearly 14 years after the violent attack that put him on the run.Williams and other alleged co-conspirators are accused of kidnapping and assaulting a woman on October 8, 2012, before shooting her and leaving her in a field in northwest Davenport, authorities said. Williams was charged in Scott County, Iowa, on October 26, 2012.After allegedly fleeing the state to avoid prosecution, Williams appeared on most-wanted lists in the Quad Cities and on the U.S. Marshals Service’s website.He is now in U.S. Marshals custody in San Diego and is awaiting extradition to Iowa, where he is expected to face the outstanding charges.“This arrest is a perfect example of those who think they have bested law enforcement and evaded arrest,” U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Iowa Ted Kamatchus said in a statement. “Deputy U.S. Marshals remain resolute in their relentless pursuit of the most dangerous offenders in our society.”
