The company has been testing ads in some regions for a while now, and it appears that India may be next. Some users in India have received an email about seeing ads on ChatGPT as the company rolls them out to more markets. The email from OpenAI notifies users about an update to the ChatGPT privacy policy. “We’re updating our Privacy Policy to include information about ads in ChatGPT, including how they work and how you can control your experience,” it reads. The company says that going forward, you may see ads on ChatGPT but not in all plans. “Ads may appear on (ChatGPT) Free and Go plans. (ChatGPT) Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education plans do not have ads,” the email reads. A screenshot of the email sent by OpenAI to Indian users. To give you some context, the ChatGPT Go plan is priced at Rs 399 per month. While the ChatGPT Plus costs Rs 1,999 per month. Do note that OpenAI already shows ads on ChatGPT in the US. The company has not officially made any comment on showing ads to Indian users. The new change officially brings ads to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Ads are also being tested in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s responsesIn case you are worried that ads may change the way ChatGPT gives you responses, OpenAI says, “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.” The company has explained that all ads will be labeled as “sponsored” and be “visually separated from the organic answer.” You can think of this as similar to the sponsored carousel you may see while doing a Google search. As per OpenAI, you may get personalized ads “using information that stays only on ChatGPT, such as ads you've interacted with, or context from your chats.”Though OpenAI insists that your personal details and conversations with ChatGPT are not shared with advertisers. “Advertisers do not have access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details. Advertisers only receive overall information about how their ads perform, such as total views or clicks,” the company says.Do note that in 2024 OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called ads the “last resort” for the company, but his stance has changed since.- EndsPublished By: Armaan AgarwalPublished On: Aug 13, 2026 12:19 IST
