AFTER ten years, three kids and some very public spats, Charlotte Dawson is the first to admit her relationship with Matt Sarsfield “is not all peachy”. But Charlotte – the daughter of the late, great Les Dawson – never imagined their latest lovers’ tiff would be caught on camera, just two years after a sexting scandal threatened to end them for good. Charlotte, 33, could be seen pleading with the former rugby player, 35, as he tried to walk off. It was a hard watch for her fans, who were concerned when footage emerged of her alone and looking distressed. But now, the star, who lives in Lancashire, has revealed what really happened that night, insisting it was nothing more than a tipsy tiff. She explains: “After the awards, I saw one of my friends, and we went into a bar and had a couple of drinks in there.” From there, they bumped into some other pals, and Charlotte decided she wanted to stay out, but Matt insisted they go home. “He said, ‘No, I want to go back, we’ve got to get the train tomorrow, Charlotte, and we’ve got to be with the kids tomorrow, we’ve got to be mum and dad tomorrow, come on’. “It wasn’t as bad as it might have looked,” she adds. “I was obviously a bit tipsy, but I was having loads of fun, and I’d not seen everyone for so long. “You know what it’s like, you all just get dead excited and dead giddy to be with each other at these types of events.” “We’re like any other couple – one always wants to stay out, while the other wants to go home.” The next day, a hungover Charlotte went online to explain what had gone on and to reassure fans everything was OK. “People probably will be thinking, oh god, they’re arguing again, because they’re always on the rocks, or whatever,” she adds. “Not everything’s rosy, and I’ve never been one to sugarcoat anything at all, and there’s lots of ups and downs, but, I mean, what relationship is perfect?” Like many couples, Charlotte finds rows happen when she’s been drinking – but day-to-day bickering is very normal for her and Matt, and she takes it all in her stride. “We’ve gone a full day without arguing, even sometimes a full week. But if I’m completely honest, I think when you’re drunk, and you’re hungover, that’s where the argument seems to come from, because you’re tired,” she says. He proposed four years later, but six years on, the couple are yet to tie the knot. It’s perhaps not surprising, though – they have had three children since then. Noah, five, Jude, three and Gigi, one. They barely have time to talk, let alone plan a wedding. “We obviously see each other, but we don’t get to spend much quality time together,” she says. “It’s all like rushed time. It’s difficult” A lot has happened since Matt got down on one knee in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, right in front of the memorial statue of her late father, Les. In 2024, while pregnant with their daughter Gigi, Charlotte was left “blindsided and humiliated” after discovering Matt’s explicit messages to another woman. Matt moved out of the family home, and friends and family truly believed the relationship was over for good. But they went to couples therapy together, and while Charlotte admits it was the lowest point, she has moved on. “Obviously, when all that happened, I was unsure what was gonna happen between us, but I was pregnant with Gigi, and we had lots of chats and lots of conversations, and we, you know, obviously we went to see someone, and we obviously sorted it out massively, and it was all a big 360 and a lot of miscommunication, stuff like that,” she explains. “But I think a lot of people make mistakes, and that’s life, isn’t it? “So, we just decided that we were going to give it another go, and it’s never been like that ever since that.” She believes couples therapy really helped get them back on track, explaining: “I think we learned so much from that and then we just thought, well, we don’t, we don’t really need it, and we definitely don’t need it now because all we do is bloody bicker. “We are really, really happy. It’s just the little tiny little stupid arguments like that. But that’s nothing, it’s nothing compared to what happened before.” Then in December of last year, it was reported the couple had split once again after Matt failed to attend an event for her tan brand Dawsylicious, but Charlotte insists that was “nothing”. And they still plan to marry – they just need to agree where. “I definitely want to get married, but I’ve been so busy making babies,” she says. “And I think we’re really stuck with what to do. “Matt really wants to just go to Vegas and get married, and obviously I want the big wedding, like a Kate Price wedding. “I really want to have the full shebang, the full fairytale. But then I don’t know whether it’s quite different going to Vegas and having a massive party. So we’re just kind of trying to figure out what we really want to do.” Now they have the children, Charlotte is keen for them to be part of the big day. She adds: “What we really want is the kids to be part of it. I want the boys to walk down with the rings. And then I want Gigi to be a flower girl. “I want them to remember it, I think, now, because they’re at that stage now. I’d probably say like another two years. I’m obsessed with my children. “I know you can’t choose, but I’d love another girl because I would love Gigi to have a little sister. Because that’d be really, really cute. “I’m really happy with the dynamic at the moment. So I don’t really want to add more right now. “Maybe when they’re a bit older, but I think I just need to be done now, to be honest. I’ve literally just like banged them all out.” As well as her tanning brand, Charlotte is about to launch a new lifestyle plan, and she has her heart set on giving it a real go at being a stand-up comedian, just like her dad. Les was one of Britain’s most beloved comedians, actors, and TV presenters – best known for gurning. In the 1970s and 80s, Opportunity Knocks host Les hosted Listen to Leson BBC Radio 2, as well as several TV shows like Sez Les, The Dawson Watch and The Les Dawson Show. The legendary comedian dropped dead in front of his wife from a heart attack at a routine hospital appointment in 1993 when he was 62, and Charlotte was around 12 months old. Charlotte has followed in her dad’s footsteps into the showbiz world, sharing comedy videos on social media. She has 1.4m followers who she entertains on a daily basis, often dancing around in her underwear, showing off her ‘belleh’. She has built her brand on being ‘real’, telling us: “Instagram is so shiny, isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I love posting all my nice pictures, but I do like to post the reality of things, because it’s not always what it seems on Instagram. “We’re all the same people, I always like to say – we all sit on the same toilet, we all poo on the same toilet. “We’re all the same human beings, guys. So that’s why I feel like everybody just needs to be together and not pull each other down.” And she hopes to take that humour that has won over millions to the stage. “I want to do stand-up comedy,” she adds. “I’m hoping to do a live show or something like that, A night out with Shazza. Get away and have a good night with me.” Between wrangling three kids under five, dodging hangover rows, and building an empire, Charlotte Dawson isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Her nights out might occasionally end up in the papers, but if there’s one thing she can guarantee her fans, it’s a proper good night out – and a bloody good laugh.
