Censor cuts 35 seconds of intimate scenes, mutes cuss words in Mirzapur The Movie

Days ahead of its theatrical release on September 4, Farhan Akhtar’s Mirzapur The Movie has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film has been cleared for a theatrical runtime of 197.19 minutes – 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The certification process, however, involved a series of modifications, including changes to abusive language and intimate scenes.As per the certification details shared by Bollywood Hungama, cuss words were muted at four places, while abusive words were replaced at six others. The board also directed changes to certain dialogues, including “Galey se lag gar”. In one instance in the first half, a word was replaced with “kamar”, while in the second half, “lanth”, meaning idiot, was altered. A caste-related reference was also asked to be changed.The CBFC further directed the makers to reduce the impact of intimate scenes by 50 per cent through modifications to both the visuals and sound. The changes were made to two sequences - one before the interval and another after it. The certification details indicate that around 35 seconds of intimate content was removed.Interestingly, the board did not seek cuts to the film’s violent or gory portions. This comes as Mirzapur The Movie takes the characters and world of the popular franchise from streaming to cinemas, retaining the gritty setting associated with the series.The film was cleared by the CBFC’s Revising Committee. Typically, a film is first examined by the Examining Committee. If the filmmakers disagree with the suggested modifications, or if the committee recommends substantial changes, the makers can approach the Revising Committee for a fresh review and a decision on certification. A source close to the film, however, said the theatrical version was cleared with “hardly any modifications” and maintained that there were no cuts to the film.
