Celebrity Mumbai cafe 'that stored food next to urinal' is closed down by inspectors

The Olympia Coffee House in the south of Mumbai has been serving hot drinks and food for over 108 years. But last week, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the licence of the restaurant after someone flagged its unhygienic food services.Inspectors found an infestation of cockroaches and flies, dirty water and food being handled on the floor. On top of this, they found raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian food that had not been properly segregated, while FDA inspectors reported the use of damaged wooden chopping boards and the absence of appropriate protective clothing among food handlers.Most shockingly, they found a urinal in the food storage area. The cafe sells a range of traditional food items, including mutton keema pav, biryani, kebabs, dal gosht and bun maska – a sweetened and buttered bread roll that was invented in Mumbai. These buns were served to Hollywood titans Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Christopher Nolan during their visit to the Olympia Coffee House in July. Universal Studios India shared a photo of the trio to their Instagram page with the caption: 'A big night awaits, but chai comes first!' Though the stars only stayed for 15 minutes, they drew massive crowds. Despite this, cafe staff had not known they had been serving Hollywood stars.Other high-profile visitors include Glenn McGrath, the Australian cricketer, who dined there in 2022. Despite its long history and ability to draw in household names, the owners of the Olympia Coffee House have been told to stop all purchasing, preparation, storage, selling and distribution of food. The FDA said: 'Further action will be considered only after complete rectification of the deficiencies and satisfactory re-inspection of premises.'
