As a young woman, she qualified as a dispenser, which is often cited as the source of her knowledge when it came to poisons. Yet, it is her career as a writer that is legendary. Christie’s official back catalogue consists of 66 detective novels, over 150 short stories, more than 25 plays, two autobiographies and six romance novels published under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. Her books have sold over one billion copies in English and a further one billion in translations. The characters that are most readily associated with Christie are Hercule Poirot (who appears in 33 novels and over 50 short stories) and Miss Marple (who solves the case in 12 novels and 20 short stories). However, there’s also Tommy and Tuppence, a young detective duo who age with each story, unlike their more famous brethren. They appear in four novels and have a dedicated short story collection. In August 1948, Christie achieved what is known as the ‘Penguin Million’. In a single day, Penguin published 100,000 copies of 10 of Christie’s books.
