Warning: Some spoilers ahead for CIA Season 2, Episode 1! CIA, the FBI spin-off starring Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss, returned last night with a bang. When the first season ended, Bill decided to stay on with the dual task force, and the show revealed that Colin’s ex-partner and paramour Toni was alive. Once it was confirmed that Toni would appear in the second season, fans might have expected the first episode to deal with her return and Colin’s feelings about it. That wasn’t the case, though. While CIA season 1 focused primarily on Colin, it looks like the show is turning things on its head in this new season and centering on Bill. The season 2 premiere immediately saw Bill dealing with the aftermath of his father's death and ended with a shocking reveal that appeared to launch this season’s overarching plotline. Who knows what will happen next, but it looks like the new season is set to shake up Bill’s worldview and change the character in some interesting ways. That could lead to CIA season 2 having much higher stakes than the first (which would be an improvement) and create some intense storylines. CIA Season 2 Sets A Dark Path For Bill Mark Schafer/CBS The CIA season 2 premiere opened with a very different Bill from the man he was in season 1. This new Bill was grieving his father and as a result, seemed to have less patience for the formalities of his job. Unfortunately, he also appeared to be less invested, as he occasionally zoned out at critical points. All of this could be chalked up to how he’s dealing with his father’s death (which is not well; even Colin was concerned about him and asked if he wanted to talk about it), but there might be more to it. Then, Bill discovered plane ticket stubs from 1998 to Tbilisi, Georgia, in some of his father’s things, something he found odd since his father was out of the military by that point. Bill mentioned it to Colin, leading Colin to investigate. When the final scene came around, it dropped a huge bomb in Bill’s lap — his father was in the CIA. While Bill doesn’t know it yet, the audience has already been given a heads-up that the mission in Georgia went wrong enough to become a stain on the agency’s history. After Colin gave Bill the information, he told him they would find out the truth together (re-establishing Colin and Bill's tense dynamic from season 1), setting up a dark path for the rule-loving Bill. Now that he knows his father lied to him, finding out who his father really was could change who Bill is. Episode 1 has already laid the seeds of a harder Bill, one who could potentially become more dangerous in season 2. Bill's Potential Transformation Will Redeem CIA Mark Schafer / ©CBS / Courtesy Everett Collection Bill was all about the rules in CIA season 1, but if CBS takes the show in a direction where he transforms from goody-two-shoes to someone more like Colin, it could be just the twist the show needs to redeem itself. Many people ruled the series out when it was first announced, before they’d even seen it, and admittedly, season 1 did have some predictability issues. With the twist about Bill's father, the show shifts from a normal procedural into spy-thriller territory. If Bill and Colin go off the reservation to discover the full truth of his father’s secrets (and knowing Colin, they likely will at some point), it could set up major consequences. Factor in the fact that someone at the CIA had to have known about his father (likely Nikki) and they never told Bill, and tensions in season 2 could potentially reach new heights CIA season 1 was decent, if fairly unremarkable (though its reliance on Colin and Bill's partnership was out of character for a show in the Dick Wolf universe). However, CIA season 2 has already broken the mold with its first episode by creating stakes that mean something. Hopefully, the show keeps taking Bill down a path of revelation that makes him rethink some of his core beliefs. While the odd-couple pairing of season 1 was fun, making Bill a bit rougher around the edges would make things a bit more unpredictable (and might be good for Colin).
