While Marshals season 1 established the stakes and characters, the finale appeared to push forward several major changes that would lead into the second season. Instead of continuing these storylines, however, what's been shared about Marshals season 2 appears to go against the grain when it comes to what was set up for the season ahead of time. From the promotional material for the season, Marshals season 2's cliffhangers seem to be resolved far too quickly, which could mean the show is being somewhat restructured. By making the show look fundamentally different with its story choices, Marshals made it seem like the next season of the series would be veering slightly away from the tone it had taken throughout its first season. Rather than continuing down the road of being a standard procedural, it appeared that Marshals season 2 would straddle the line between a Yellowstone-style drama and a somewhat standard CBS procedural like its peers on the network. Within the final episode, viewers saw Cal and Belle investigating a lead connected to the conspiracy surrounding East Camp, but when they found their suspect already dead, the trap had been laid. Cal and Belle came under attack, and the episode cut away from the story before viewers knew if they'd survived or not. With personal stakes at an all-time high, not knowing what happened to the pair indicated a potential shift for the series. On top of that, Andrea Cruz's (Ash Santos) storyline appeared to be headed toward major change with the opportunity to move to Washington, D.C. looming. While there seemed to be a push toward Andrea leaving as she packed up her locker and bid the team goodbye, viewers didn't actually get to see a resolution. Finally, Tate's disappearance without Kayce knowing what was happening to his son was a massive shift for the series, as it saw one of the most important characters ripped away from the story. With Kayce unaware of the kidnapping during the Marshals season 1 finale, it felt clear that Marshals would launch season 2 with the story. These three stories appeared to be shaping season 2 into a very different series. Marshals Season 2 Walks Back On Every Major Character Set-Up While Marshals season 2 has yet to begin, the series has already appeared to renege on many of the cliffhangers it set up in the first season's finale. Though the cliffhangers were always meant to be resolved within early episodes of Marshals season 2, the information available about the show leading up to the new season has provided more of a look into resolutions than necessary. While not fully spoiled, it's clear that Marshals season 2 will be moving past the cliffhangers quickly, and likely in ways that mean they don't have much of a bearing on the show's future. Cal and Belle are the clearest example of this switch up, as both were left in intense danger during the Marshals season 1 finale. While it seemed likely that they would both survive, it wasn't clear if the pair would continue to be part of the series after the first season as a whole. Both Marshall-Green and Kebbel, however, are listed as part of the Marshals season 2 cast in official press releases, and they both appear in the show's promotional material, including episode stills. Both actors are staying with the show, which spoils the story before it's real resolution. Andrea's story, which felt like it was leaning toward her leaving Montana entirely, will be a part of Marshals season 2 as Santos will also be continuing as part of the show's cast. With another cliffhanger deflating, Marshals season 2 does manage to hold onto one of its finale plots, but not well. CBS' official synopsis for the season premiere provides some context on Kayce's reaction to Tate's kidnapping, but while viewers are likely to get more context about that story's resolution, it appears that it will be fully resolved within the Marshals season 2 premiere, which is somewhat disappointing. How Marshals Can Effectively Have Stakes Despite Being A Procedural While Marshals does appear to be taking more of a procedural approach to its storytelling, the Yellowstone elements of the show make it a markedly different series than its peers. Despite the fact that the cliffhangers of the first season appear to be heavily resolved by the time Marshals season 2 gets underway, the show's stakes are still at an all-time high with Tate being kidnapped and Kayce searching to save him. Even so, keeping the stakes high on a series that operates as a procedural, which tries to resolve high-stakes stories quickly, is going to be the show's hurdle. The key to making sure that Marshals is able to move forward successfully, keeping viewers interested in the stories and maintaining high stakes throughout its more serialized elements, is continuity. Procedurals don't need every episode to transform their characters, but staying consistent with their personal stakes while moving through larger story elements is what allows large-scale plots to hit hard when they appear. Rather than introducing big story elements and then scaling them back immediately, Marshals needs to let their stories move forward with a consistency that feels natural. Marshals season 2 has the chance to maintain a new status-quo.
