Even though the CBS procedural is only now heading into its fourth installment, which debuts on October 4, there have already been significant shifts in the characters that surround Justin Hartley's Colter Shaw. Robin Weigert exited the role of Teddi at the end of season 1, with the departures of Abby McEnany and Eric Graise signaling goodbyes for Velma and Bobby at the end of season 2. The one regular presence in Colter's life since the show started has been Reenie Greene, the attorney who is at times positioned as Colter's love interest but perhaps more often serves as a reliable confidant and help during tricky cases-of-the-week. The latest casting news suggests Tracker season 4 may be giving Reenie more screen time. Deadline reports that Cassady McClincy Zhang has been promoted to a series regular for Tracker season 4. Zhang portrays Melanie Day, Reenie's assistant, who made her first appearance in the third episode of season 3. She has already been a part of 15 episodes so far. The addition of Zhang's character as a permanent series regular for season 4 comes after Chris Lee, who plays Bobby's hacker cousin Randy, was upped to a main cast member in March. It signals that the CBS drama, which is based on The Never Game by author Jeffery Deaver, is attempting to rebuild its supporting roster after the losses of Teddi, Velma, and Bobby. It also suggests viewers may see more of Reenie's work life. Mel has largely been depicted as Reenie's bright assistant who doesn't hesitate to go the extra mile. But in other scenes, she's tried to push Reenie to have more of a personal life and be less singularly focused on work. It remains to be seen whether that means a rekindling of the potential romance that Reenie has with Colter. Elsewhere in Tracker season 4, which is moving production from Vancouver to Los Angeles, Jensen Ackles is reprising his role as Russell Shaw. It comes after the season 3 finale, in which Russell, Colter's older brother, hides information about the siblings' past and chooses to abruptly vanish. Russell is confirmed to return in the fifth episode of the new installment, seeking Colter's help for a friend. It's a full slate for showrunner and executive producer Elwood Reid, along with the EP team of Hartley, Ken Olin, Sharon Lee Watson, Alex Katsnelson, Travis Donnelly, and Ryan O’Nan. But it looks like Tracker will inch just a little closer to the ensemble side of the ledger. Tracker season 4 premieres Sunday, October 4 at 9:30 PM ET on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
