Case filed against IIT-Kanpur professor after wife alleges assault, forced sex

Police have registered an FIR against an IIT-Kanpur professor after his wife accused him of abuse, assault and coercion. The complainant, an assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science, alleged that she had faced sustained physical and mental abuse since last year.Representational image (Photo: ITG)An FIR has been registered against a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) after his wife, who is also an assistant professor at the institute, accused him of domestic violence, physical assault, mental cruelty, criminal intimidation and attempting to force sexual relations, police said on Thursday.The case was lodged by Kalyanpur police after the woman filed a complaint on Wednesday. Police said the matter is under investigation and further legal action will depend on the evidence collected. "Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Dilip Kumar Singh said.The complainant, an assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science, alleged that she had faced sustained physical and mental abuse since late 2025. She accused her husband, a professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Cognitive Science, of repeatedly assaulting and threatening her, damaging household property and subjecting her to prolonged harassment.In her complaint, the woman alleged that her husband admitted to having an affair with one of his former PhD scholars and was currently involved in an inappropriate relationship with a woman colleague. She claimed that when she confronted him over the alleged relationships, she was repeatedly assaulted and intimidated. She also alleged that the professor attempted to force sexual relations despite her refusal, shared intimate details of their private life with lawyers through emails, and caused her such mental trauma that she suffered an anxiety attack and had to be hospitalised.
