Carolina Hurricanes Sign Captain Jordan Staal To One-Year Extension

The Carolina Hurricanes will be bringing back their captain and Conn Smythe Trophy winner for an additional season.Jordan Staal has agreed to a one-year extension with a modest $900k cap hit, the team announced Tuesday. The deal will kick in during the 2027-28 season.According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the extension will come with a $4 million signing bonus and contains up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses."Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization," said Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky. "His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh."The Thunder Bay, Ont., native is entering the final season of a four-year contract with the Hurricanes that is paying him $2.97 million per season. The 38-year-old was a second-overall pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 NHL Draft, winning his first Stanley Cup three years later with the franchise in 2009.
