Candidate switch, voter anger, inactive cadre: Why BJP lost Datia bypoll

Singh secured 66,757 votes against Tiwari's 60,741.While accepting the verdict, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the BJP respected the people's mandate, while pointing out that the party had increased its vote tally by around 1,700 compared to the 2023 Assembly election.LAST-MINUTE CANDIDATE SWITCH TRIGGERED DISSENTOne of the biggest factors believed to have hurt the BJP was its decision to replace former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra with Ashutosh Tiwari shortly before the election. Following the vacancy of the seat, Mishra had reportedly begun preparing for the bypoll, and his supporters were confident that he would be fielded by the party. However, the BJP's last-minute decision to nominate Tiwari triggered widespread resentment among party workers.The discontent spilled onto the streets, with Mishra's supporters blocking the Gwalior-Jhansi Highway for nearly 18 hours in protest. Although the agitation ended after Mishra appealed for calm, observers believe the anger among grassroots workers never fully subsided and continued to affect the party's campaign until polling day.LOCAL ISSUES HURT BJP Analysts also point to unresolved civic and development issues that had persisted since the 2023 Assembly election.Concerns over poor roads, drinking water supply, employment opportunities and the condition of local businesses reportedly remained key issues for voters. According to political observers, many residents felt these concerns had not been adequately addressed, contributing to the BJP's inability to regain the seat.INACTIVE CADRE WEAKENED CAMPAIGNAnother major factor was the apparent inactivity of Narottam Mishra's long-standing support base. For nearly 18 years, several important organisational positions in the constituency had been held by leaders considered close to Mishra. After he was denied the ticket, a significant section of these workers reportedly stayed away from active campaigning.Although they remained with the party, many were said to have played only a limited role during the election. Senior BJP leaders, along with Mishra himself, appealed to workers to unite behind the official candidate, but with little time left before polling, the party was unable to fully revive its local organisational machinery.CM MOHAN YADAV ACCEPTS VERDICTResponding to the result, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the BJP accepted the people's verdict and would continue working with renewed strength.He noted that the Congress had also won the Datia seat in the 2023 Assembly election and emphasised that the BJP had increased its vote share compared to that contest. Yadav also highlighted the BJP's recent electoral successes, including victories in the Budhni and Amarwara bypolls, all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, and all three Rajya Sabha seats in the state."In a democracy, everyone expresses their views during elections. We expressed our views, the Congress expressed its views. We accept the decision made by the people.
