Canadiens Announce Multi-Year Extension For Martin St. Louis, Josh Anderson Named Assistant Captain

The Montreal Canadiens have reportedly locked up their head coach for three more seasons beyond his current deal, while naming one of their key veteran players to their leadership core.The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to a multi-year extension with head coach Martin St. Louis, the team announced Monday.According to TSN’s Pierre Lebrun, the deal is believed to be three years on top of his current contract, meaning St. Louis is signed through the 2029-30 season."Marty has done a terrific job leading our young team," Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said in a statement. "He is a great communicator and teacher. We look forward to his continued efforts to mold this group into a championship-caliber team."St. Louis is entering his fifth season behind the bench in Montreal, where he’s put together a 149–136–43 record. In his time as head coach the Canadiens have made the playoffs twice, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Final last season. The 51-year-old was a Jack Adams award finalist at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season after the Canadiens improved by 15 standings points and broke a four-year playoff drought.He was hired as interim head coach on Feb. 9, 2022, and was officially named the 32nd head coach in Canadiens history on June 1st, 2022.This news comes after a few key pieces of business got done in Montreal over the weekend, signing Chris Kreider to a one-year contract and retaining RFA Zachary Bolduc on a four-year extension.Additionally, the Canadiens have announced that Josh Anderson and Mike Matheson will be the team's alternate captains ahead of the 2026-27 season, joining Nick Suzuki on the leadership core.Anderson will be filling the vacancy left by Brendan Gallagher after he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks earlier in the off-season.For action-packed issues, access to the entire magazine archive and a free issue, subscribe to The Hockey News at THN.com/free.
